Dave had a 42T so i think he did amazingly for us to only have to wait 3-4 minutes at Kangaroo ground. i think Dave also mentioned being rahter hesitant on the descents due to a recent broken bone scenario too

Keep doing those midweek cruises Dave. it gets better. And keep spinning that smaller gear😉

  2. Boo😠

only got 79kph down Harrison Gully.
Sprinted at the top, didnt touch the brakes (for the first time) and still went slower. headwinds me suspects
I also hit 79kph down the hill to Greensborough (altho Hippy flew past me!)
and also 69kph suckin Hippy's wheel going down Rosanna Rd past the army barracks

definetely rode that a little quicker than previous weeks and had a rather comical cramp-attack as Tony, Kyra and me were standing around talking at shoppingtown

think i might scope out that backstreet route thru Banyule a tad better, too! 🙄

hey hippy, was that the 'new black' you were wearing? 😄

Ha! Knew I'd bump into you sooner or later😄

With all the other guy's stats, it looks like I'll have to strap on
the HR monitor and see if I can find a cheap Polar cadence
sensor.. wouldn't want to miss Stat Wars! ;-)

You do need to be working above the HR at which lactic
acid starts to accumilate in your body (LT). Over time
you'll find you will be able to sustain a higher power
output at higher heart rate for longer without the feeling
of having lead in your legs and you'll feel better at the
end of the ride. You don't want to be going Anaerobic if
you can help it as you will not be able to maintain this
level for very long at all. You want to be build your
    endurance base.

My understanding is my max heart rate is around 180 based on
age and the fact that my resting heart rate is pretty low
(around 50). The thing is, it doesn't take much for me to
get up high but by the same token I recover pretty quick.
Lactic acid HR seems to be around 158 which I probably spent
half the ride in, but luckily once I lost you guys I could
drop the pace for the ride home and don't have any soreness
today (which I find hard to believe).

I don't really know your riding history but you might want
to look at giving the hilly rides a miss for a few weeks,
opting instead for a longer flatter rides of a managable
distance to start with but gradually increasing the
    distance as the weeks progress.

I've been riding the flat for a while and thought my
fitness was coming along nicely, until the first ride with
Tony and Dutch. But that first ride in the hills was a bit
of a wake up call. During winter I'm doing a
base, build, peak for October for Asics half-marathon and
then the 100km wuss round the bay in a day. So my base is
just coming to an end and I need to start getting into the
hills, although once a fortnight will probably do so I can
alternate weekends with a hard run or a hard ride (unlike
this weekend where I did both).

It's 13-28 which to most of you is probably ok but all my
riding during the week is on MTB which takes me down to
28-28 front-rear so the road 42-28 is a bit of a shock on
    the big hills

At least you remembered to start your HRM! The reason I didn't
have a max speed down there was because I stopped it while
waiting for the bunch at the start! Duh! <smacks head>

I should go out there one day and just do hill repeats on it.. it'll
cain me going up and then I get multiple chances of top speed
    runs going down.

You were coasting weren't you? I cheated and threw in a few

I didn't drink enough during the ride (wanted to save weight for
the hills so only carried 1 bidon) and I'm a bit dehydrated now.
Maybe you didn't drink enough either? Oh, I know.. it was that

Yeah, it's my SUPER VISIBILITY suit.. works really well with a

I usually wear more colourful road jerseys but I really like this
mtb jersey I got for my b'day.

42-28? Fabrizio would be appalled! Anything less than 42-21 is admitting defeat!

Yeah. rode up to a very wet-bedraggled-depressed-lookin Geoff somewhere round Werribee under a bridge with a puncture and he had run out of spares so I gave him one of mine (and the silly bugger tried to give me money! my theory is it could be me one day...)
He told me the tale-of-RTB but i didnt hear it clearly...

I was watching the speedo yesterday and found that if I was
peddaling downhill I was happy to get up to around 55-
60kph, but if I was rolling I would automatically grab for
the brake at around 50kph. The human mind works in funny
ways when it comes to self-preservation. Mind you in the
weeks after I first got back on the bike I was grabbign the
    brake at 35kph.

  10. Hey all,

Great ride... was kind of enjoyable, but I died in the ass on belmore road. Total trip was about 70kms for me, with ave spd at 25.3km/h (no doubt helped along by me chasing down the pack on doncaster road).
My max spd on that first downhill was 81.0km/h... i stopped peddling when Jason did and rolled down... will endevour for an 85 on the next ride.
I definately need to work on selecting the best gear for climbing when approaching hills... I am positive I geared down way to early on most hills and had to work hard to stay with the group.
Nonetheless, it was a great ride and spent most of yesterday either sleeping or drinking to get some fluids back.
Is it wrong that my knees are hurting? Bad bike set-up??

    thanks,
    Bill

    Yes and no.

Mine are too, but that is probably because road riding, riding hills
and riding my fixie are all things I've not done a lot of (at least recently).

Is it a sharp pain or a dull ache? It could just be fatigue or it
could be bike setup. Seat too high, too low? Pushing too big a
gear up the hills? Not used to hills/distance/speed?

Is it your actual knee or the muscles around it? Were you
wearing leg warmers or leggings? My knees often ache after a
ride because I (used to) always forget my arm/leg warmers..

  12. It was a great day, i definately think we pushed harder than other weeks.......the bigger bucnch definately helped!

i will take your lead and do some spinning during the week, this should elliminate my habit of being dropped every time the bunch put the foot down. Not that i dont mind chatting to you just that i would prefer to do it while in the group rather than 800m behind
    😄

Cheers C Y guys next week

you did good and i think hippy was towing us on the last few hills!
The gear selection thing take ages. I tend to go with a pre-concieved guess on each hill. If its a slow rise I'll stay in the same gear and put in adozen stron strokes and then change down 1-2 gears and spin the 2nd half.
The biggets mistake i see lots of riders make (not saying you did this) is they 'pause' at the bottom rather than keeping moving. not sure whether its a 'cant-ride-and-change-gears-at-the-same-time' thing or if its a psychological grab the hill gts on them. On beach Rd people drop 10kph on the wussiest rise. wierd😕
When you first arrived i thought 'blimey. wonder if he rides track?', and everytime i guessed you'd be off the back you were right there!
Me and Tony had a huge advantage knowing where to go hard and ease up. Next week should be a hoot.

AND HOWABOUT THE WEATHER??? 4 Sundays in a row like that!!!
    oh oh. rain fairy cometh...

PS points off/20seconds-penalty to Geoff for asking was there any coffee to be had 'out there'😄 😄 😄

Yeah, you just tend to 'know' once you've done a few and then
you can always adjust as you climb. With the modern stuff, you
are supposed to be able to change under load but I still don't
like to do this. What you can do is instead of stopping your pedaling totally, just ease up on the power for the precise pedal
stroke when you are changing. i.e. put in a hard right pedal stroke to build extra momentum and then time the change so that it happens on your left leg going down - but don't really apply pressure on that down stroke. You should be moving just as fast (due to the harder stroke) but you'll be in a different gear.
This seems to work okay for me when I _have_ to change mid-climb. See how much trouble ss'ing removes from riding 🙂

    Quoted message said:

Yeah, that's kinda what I mean above. Build up the momentum
and sort of 'coast' while changing gears.

ss'ing teaches you to conserve that precious momentum and then
takes away all memory of changing gears so you come unstuck later anyway 😄

    hippy... towing? .. BWAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHA!!! 😄

I would have to agree with Jason.......There was definately some towing, easpecially when it came to the run through ivanhoe.

    for everyone that wasnt there,
we had a foriegn rider group up with us on Lower Heidelberg road, i said hi.....he ignored me, 500m down the road we stop at the lights....i ask again how are you going and where have you ridden from.......im ignored again as he takes off on his shiny new TCR composite 2......so i follow his break up past ivanhoe grammer, then to my and the worlds astonishment he drops me  yes its true........
Then up steps Hippy who decides enough is enough and he takes off after him.......a brilliant display of sprinting..some might even have thought he looked like a rider who would be suited to the track....
i think he did catch him however im not quite sure because he left myself and jason well behind 😄 its a shame because i was keen to take Hippy's advice and give the other guy a slight nudge when he was track standing outside the paper mill.....it would have been mean but would have made me feel vindicated for his blatent disrespect 😠

Yes, I did catch him. Unfortunately, not having a clue where we were going meant that I had to let him go so you guys could lead on..

I think he must have been a triathlete in disguise 😉
