  1. When I attach the pump and press on it to inflate the Schrader valve
disappears into the wheel frame. I there a way to prevent this? The valve
doesn't have a nut to hold it out? Seems a stupid design

Stand firm in your refusal to remain conscious during algebra. In real life,
I assure you, there is no such thing as algebra.

Press the tire where the back of the valve is (using thumb and cahones)
until the air pressure holds it for you.

I'm sure it's the design, not the user.

    You're exactly correct!

You can use Presta valve tubes in a rim drilled for Schrader valves. You
usually don't need those shims and all that [censored] some say are required.

You can buy Schrader valves with a nut on it. They weigh a ton so it's
probably cheaper and lighter to learn how to inflate the ones without the
    nut.

thanks I'll give that a go. I was hoping that there would be some other way.

You should buy tubes with longer stems next time.

For now, assuming the tubes you have have threaded stems, you can
carry the nut that came with the tube in your kit, and screw it on
when you're ready to start inflating. Once you have a reasonable
amount of pressure in the tube, the nut is no longer needed.
