Note that humans train up quite nicely for distance racing. Horses can do 40 mph in 2-minute events, but the longer the event, the more humans are favoured.
Bicycles fit in interestingly: we can't outsprint horses, but on level ground cyclists can beat horse riders given a sufficiently long course.
