  1. Hey,

Do not say apples and oranges. Most of us are smart enough to draw
    that conclusion.

The Tour 1 Month long. So Lance the best for 6 total months. Total
    Team Effort.

NBA Many cities, long playoff brackets. Total Team Effort.

6 Championships with the same Team leader. Which is more impressive?
Does any other run in the annals of sports history even compare?

    Thanks,
    Ronde Champ

On "pardon The Interuption" today they were talking about where Lance ranks in
sport. They came up with Jordan, Bill Russell, Joe Montana, and a few others
    but not many.
Nice to see him getting the respect.

Sorry, it's like comparing peaches and grapefruit.

I'm a died-in-the-wool roadie, but I also was in Chicago for the first three
of those Bulls championships. I don't think Michael Jordan played a game I
didn't see ... of basketball. And I guess that's where I give Jordan the
nod. He's so competitive that he attempted a pro baseball career and
considered playing pro golf. I followed him around during a practice round
he got to play at the Western Open one time and watched him split the
fairway time after time. The guy could do just about anything. Lance has
the Tour de France down pat. Let see him really try boxing or something and
I might change my mind and give him the nod.

Except that there are at least 10 other cyclists with combinations of
sporting success, personality, style, and drive that would outrank Armstrong
on most enthusiasts' lists. To put it this way, who would you rather watch
    - Armstrong in his prime or Merckx in his prime? There's no comparison.

    -Sonarrat.

Yeah, but we're talking US TV, so even if they knew who Merckx,
Hinault, Bartali, etc was, they'd still not mention him because
everything is so dumbed down, lowest common denominator, kind of like
    GWB...

  6. Disagree. 6 tours is a greater achievement. My reasoning is that although
road racing and basketball are both team sports, out of the 2, road racing
emthasizes individual effort more. Given, if M.J. had an off night, which
admittedly rarely happened, He did have 4 others on the floor trying to add
more points towards the "team effort".
If Armstrong has a bad day, no one can do a thing about every second he
    looses.
    bottom line:
M.J. has no championships.....but the Bulls do
    Armstrong has 5 tour wins

I heard a rumor Lance is taking up surfing, and for that matter, that Jan
Ullrich routinely heads to South Africa to surf in the off season. Maybe
they'll both take AI and Kelly on in the next ASP rout (AI, Andy Irons is
the current champ, Kelly Slater a 6 time champ)

Edwin Moses had a pretty nice run: 122 consecutive victories over a 10 year
stretch, including 2 Olympic gold medals (and would have had three if not
for the boycott of the Moscow games).

Rod Laver won the grand slam in Tennis in 62, then turned pro and was
ineligible for it again for 7 years. Then in 69, with the dawning of the
open era, he won the grand slam again. If the big tounaments had been open
during those 7 years, there is no telling how many times he would have won.

And as others have mentioned, Eddy Merckx was no slouch either.

Oh, and two years ago, people would have been putting Tiger on that short
    list too.

Golf is a GAME not a Sport (athletic contest).
In golf you can be fat and smoke and drink whisky While you play and
    still be a pro champion.

Gold is like bowling, shooting, or archery. It is a skill requiring
    zero aerobic endurance.

A sport is a physical activity that is played competitively. Some sports
are also games, and some are not. (Basketball and football are games. So
the distinction between games and sports doesn't do much for me.)

Babe Ruth was fat, smoked and drank, and was a hellofa champion. So I guess
baseball is not a sport? For a more recent example of a tub of lard, look
    at David Wells.

Aerobic endurance is only one thing that might be involved in a sport. They
also typically require strength, stamina, coolness under pressure,
coordination, flexibility, etc... I've seen lots of [censored] articles claiming
that cycling is not a real sport because it doesn't emphasize some of these
other factors. It's just as much [censored] to say that golf is not a sport
because it doesn't require a huge aerobic engine.

Frankly, I will take the cowards way out of the debate. When I want to find
out the results of a golf tournament, I go to ESPN. That's basically enough
to make it a sport for me. When I need to find out info about chess or
bridge tournaments, I have to go elsewhere.
