Yes, I've had 2 logs in 2005...........I'm looking forward to another
one today.

There's your problem! You need more roughage in your diet.

For a given day,

enter milage for workout 1 in column C
enter the shoe number for workout 1 in column D. The shoe number
corresponds to the number in the shoe sheet.

enter the comment for workout 1 in column G

In the shoe sheet, replace the "name" field of shoe 1 (row 2, col A) with
one of your pairs of shoes (e.g. Asics 2090). Put the milage you've
already got on that shoe in the "last year" column (row 3, col A). Repeat
this for other pairs of shoes. Repeat this for all other shoes. For
example, if you have a pair of DS trainers, put those in col B on the
shoe sheet.

So now if you do a workout using your Asics 2090, you should put '1' in
the shoe column for that workout, but if you use the DS Trainer, you should
put '2' in the shoe column.

If you do another workout, do the same in columnds E,F,H for
workout 2.

HTH.

that all seems simple, so my problem must reflect my computer illiteracy.

I open the file with excel and I see an incompatible format window, I
close that by clicking ok, and I see a spreadsheet with a bunch of
symbols all over it.

Well, Thinnmann uses a tab for each month which I kind of like and has the dates preset so you just log the type of run,
time and distance. It has room for 2 runs per day. It track shoe mileage and there are 2 pages for mileage totals. One
is a graph and one a column.

I just started using Logrun.xls but so far it seems to be a bit more complete adding heart rate to the equations.
Although I don't track my HR, Maybe I'll start now.
You enter a date, distance, time and HR and it gives %HR, pace/mile week to date, month to date and year to date mileage.
The tabs are set up for Training Plans, Totals per Month, Totals per Week, 30 day totals(graph), 7 day totals(graph),
Around the World graph, weight and weight graph, race history a running calculator page and a few others I haven't
looked at yet.

Best thing to do is download and play with them for a while.

Doug,
Were there *really* that many bugs in the file last year?
That is what one gets for waiting until last minute and then redoing
it while on a ski vacation...
So I put it together early in December and had some people download
the beta version to make sure it was OK.... and there was an = where
there should have been a - , and later there was an O33 where there
should have been an O34...
But the 2005 version is up on the site and it is functioning fine.
Anyone can download it at http://thinnmann.com

In addition to running mileage, you can record swimming and cycling
this year, heart rate data, weight and calorie data, and get some nice
graphs. I added internal links to ease navigation, since the number
of sheets has grown.

I *knew* the shoe tracking method looked familiar when I looked at
yours, Donovan....

Why aren't you running with RVRR?

I have looked at this guy's and it is very good - especially the way

I think there are a lot of free online logs that seem to have popped
up if you do a search for them.

Too good an idea to pass up (-; I've found that extremely useful, as I'm sure
everyone who's ever downloaded yours (and now mine) has.

For the most part, I like to run the NY races, which is why I run with a NY
based club. The main advantage of the nyrr races is that it's a convenient
commute for me, and the races are for the most part well organised. In NJ,
some of the races I've done were very good, but some weren't. This year I
want to pick out a couple of good 10k races in NJ (which ones do you
recommend?)

I found about three in January if I remember correctly. For all I know
that may have been the only three for all 12 months and in the grand
picture a trivial amount of problems. For those following this, you
were very response to problems.

In all fairness I wrote programming tools for 30 years and spent lots of
time designing, coding and testing. Even the small amount of time I
spent in debug mode reminded of work and what I has escaped and my
patience was thin. I can see you did a lot of work and the fact that
you give it out for free and care and feed it, is really appreciated.
Hopefully I'm the only curmudgeon. ;)

Any juicy stories about the "vacation" besides the skiing? Some
voluptuous snow bunny was helping you type?

I did like the format and ease of use and I grabbed the 2005 version.
The good news, no problems in the first 4 days. :)

I only have a single digit IQ and the recording patience of a water
spider so all I want to record is mileage. I know of folks on r.r will
probably want a few thousand other columns to record bowel movements,
color toilet paper, WAVA numbers, etc but I'm not one of those. Will I
cause any problems if I deleted columns P-X ( cross train notes through
sleep). Maybe I'll use calories column to record my beer and wine
consumption. :)

I just use grid paper and document date, time, distance, temp,RHR and
weight. Would like to include more info but I'm just starting to log my
runs again and decided to keep it simple.

I've been using Nike's running log <http://www.nike.com/nikerunning/>
You have to register, but I don't get spam from them. It is a Flash
based app that keeps your data on their server. You can log your info at
any internet accessible computer. It fits my needs perfectly. I like to
record my distance; track my shoe mileage; track time, place, temp and
conditions. I like the way everything is presented and the ease of
entering the info. I've never entered a Nike shoe into the shoe tracker
and I haven't been booted from the system yet!

Also used Road Runners Sports log and Runners World log but found them
to be lacking.

killing those columns should only kill the graphs, which you can also
nuke if you want. I hide workout #2 columns myself, plus change "cross
training notes" (col P) to record my "barefoot minutes" and calculate a
"percent barefoot" at the top of the column.

I have been running about a third of my mileage barefoot (or with
minimal shoes in winter), with fantastic results - improved racing and
no more twisted ankles or lower-leg overuse injuries!

Mine is basically just a milage tracker which lets you track across multiple
pairs of shoes. You can safely ignore the shoe part if you like, though I find
if you rotate multiple pairs (almost half a dozen in my case) and like to keep
track of milage on your shoes, it makes life much simpler.

I tend to just put other things (race times, workout performances) in the
comments field and if I want to check past performances in a workout, I just
use the search functions. I don't do enough races for those to need a
spreadsheet, and I doubt many people here do (besides Lance perhaps)

With that many pairs in rotation you need a spreed sheet to keep track.
