BOYCOTT ENTENMANN'S!

I require a low fat diet for medical reasons, and have often bought Entenmann's fat-free cakes. Suddenly, they are no longer on the store shelves! In their place has been pushed some new, highly unhealthy garbage - high fat content "low carb" cakes. Seems that it's cheaper, more profitable, to make cake with lard and other such [censored] that is responsible for thousands of premature deaths every year. Until they bring back the low fat cake, and at the same price as it was previously - BOYCOTT ENTENMANN'S!

I require a low fat diet for medical reasons, and have often
bought Entenmann's fat-free cakes. Suddenly, they are no
longer on the store shelves!
In their place has been pushed some new, highly unhealthy
garbage - high fat content "low carb" cakes. Seems that it's
cheaper, more profitable, to make cake with lard and other
such [censored] that is responsible for thousands of premature
deaths every year.
Until they bring back the low fat cake, and at the same
price as it was previously -

If you have a medical problem, why would you want cake
anyway?
Sugar isn't going to make anything better.
Make your own cake but substitute more applesauce and prunes
for sugar. Line pan with wax paper instead of using pam.

One reason for buying a cake: portion control. (Even if it's
a fairly full-size one.) I really wished flour (white flour)
could be purchased by the pound or even the half-pound.
You buy one, you eat it, and then it is gone.

cakes, I buy sponge cakes sometimes (Oberlanders) but I

found out that you could not live without these cakes so we
have pulled them from all of the store shelves. You will
never find them again.

years now (didn't they change hands a few years ago? Seems

I've been disappointed in Entemann's products for a few
years now (didn't they change hands a few years ago? Seems
like that we the beginning of the end.) For this reason, I
haven't paid much attention to their products for a while.

How about angel food cake? Has mostly egg whites. Bake one,
cut it a put pieces in sandwich bags and freeze. LK

years now (didn't they change hands a few years ago?
Yes, they were purchased by Friehofer's Bakery in
upstate NY.
The product lines of both Entenmann's and Friehofer's have
changed quite a bit.
The prices have gone up a lot too.

Entenmann's plant.

Friehofer's has been around for a long, long time.
They used to deliver with horse drawn wagons.
Having grown up in the Capital District, I can comment a bit
on the history of Freihofer's. They started out around 90
years ago in Troy, NY. When I was growing up in the
Schenectady area in the 1970s, we bought mostly Freihofer
breads at the supermarket, and the chocolate chip cookies
were some of the best commercially available cookies around.
And yes, we had a thrift shop as well, located a block or
two off of State Street in Schenectady, very close to our
family dentist's office. (That geographic coincidence might
explain a lot about my cavities...)
I remember the cookies being not-so-great in the late 1980s.
It wasn't until I talked to an older friend in ~1991 that I
found out that when Freihofer had been bought out years
earlier, they changed a lot of the recipes to make them
cheaper and easier to mass-produce. The breads basically
tasted all the same, and the cookies started using corn
syrup instead of the more expensive ingredients I remember
from my childhood.
If one goes to the web site freihofers.comfreihofers.com you
can see that both Freihofer's and Entenmann's are owned by
George Weston Bakeries, which appears to be some big
baking company conglomerate. They've doubtless sterilized
what little character was left in both chains before they
were absorbed.

This unfortunately happens too often.
I grew up in the Boston area, and we had Cushman's bakery
(they used to come twice a week -- to the house! -- and you
could pick what you wanted.) It was (I recall, anyway)
allll goood.
Later years I came across some Cushman's stuff, and it was
god-awful.
