  1. Ramsey woke me up early this morning. Missy decided to go outside so I
went to walk her. Not before I took a couple of eggs outta the fridge to
fry up for breakfast. When I walked out the back door there was another
beheaded rabbit. GAG... It spoiled my breakfast. I don't know why Bart
    beheads the rabbits.

Half asleep? I was barely crawling. Ramsey was rambunctious this am.
I'm now getting over the gross part and will make my eggs. I'll do them
over easy with a side of bacon. I don't feel like making house made
potatoes and will do frozen hash browns. I'll make some country style
gravy to smother the spuds in.

Andy, you are talking to a transplanted city person. Yes, it's been 5
years since I moved to the burbs but still... Dead rabbits are not on the
menu ;o) Bart is a doll and I love her but she is pretty feral. On a
positive note she keeps the bunnies from eating my lillys.

According to my cat's personal physician, there are nutrients in brains that
cats can't get anywhere else, unless they're added to cat food. Cats must
instinctively know what they need to eat.

Don't think of it as dead rabbit, think of it as fresh rabbit. 😄

Ahem... I don't know where the head was and I don't want to know... but once
you skin the rabbit it's much like chicken. Cut into pieces, lots of garlic
and mushrooms, onion and olive oil, brown it it a pan, deglaze with a couple
of glugs of white wine then add chicken stock or water and lots of pepper
and salt. Cover and simmer for a couple of hours.

Of course I can see where that surprise would be, well, a surprise. But
think about how our ancestors used to cook rabbit. They didn't often have
    wine, though.

While this is probably the 'real' story, I always figured there was a secret
cat meadow somewhere, decorated with bunny heads on spikes, where cats light
bonfires and dance wild dances to the full moon.......

chipper -factual life is no fun :/

  11. I agree with the poster that said you should eat it.

They're easy to skin, and great to eat.

Seriously, cats do require specific amino acid profiles:

    http://www.drsfostersmith.com/pic/article.cfm?dept_id=0&siteid=1&acatid=2
    97&aid=547

    Cats also require Taurine.

People that try to make their cats into vegetarians are animal abusers.

I thought of that too. ;-)
If the rabbit a cat brought me was reasonably fresh, I'd probably use it.

If it sat in the sun for any length of time, no way.

The last two wild rabbits I ate were ones I accidently hit with the
car...... but at least they were fresh! <G>

The last deer I put in the freezer was also one I hit, but we had deer
tags and it was deer season. That's the only way it's legal here.

If you hit a deer and you have deer tags, and it's in season, you can
    tag it and take it.

But I don't recommend it. The insurance deductible to the damage to the
vehicle is just a bit dear (pun intended...... <G>😉

Same here in NY. Without tags, only the police are allowed to take them to
their buddies who butcher them and enjoy them, because the deer aren't dead
in the same way as if you or I took them home and ate them.

I'd go more by temperature, if it's somewhat cool, I'd use it if it
    were within 5 or 6 hours. I regularly keep rabbits/squirrels in a
hunting vest for this length of time before cleaning them, and I'm
    still here...

Deer hunting with your car is a bit expensive, I'd say...

Here locally, they take fresh road kills over to the jail for the
    inmates. Seriously.

Well, as long as they've not started to obviously spoil, but sitting out
in the open like that usually attracts flies.

Maggots hatch in record time around here. :-P And the animal is not
always dead..... but that's another story. <sigh>

That, I think, was my point. Unless you have a large truck with a really
    good "brush guard". <G>

I did pick up someone elses road kill deer one night on the way home
from work. I drove by it and the eyes reflected the headlights. I
stopped and it was still warm and limp... and the tags were in my wallet.

There is a _tremendous_ increase of in-town road kills of the white
tailed deer during hunting season. It seems to drive them in and these
    deer breed like rabbits!

Rabbit heads must be really tasty. A lot of cats and dogs bring home rabbit
treats foe their masters but always seem unable to resist chewing off the
    tasty bits first.

Weren't you frightened you might get hit yourself?

Interesting. Brains contain a *lot* of cholesterol. My cats
laways ate the heads off of bird, chipmunks, baby ducks, and as a
    rare treat, rabbits (hi patches!)

I suspect the skulls are great teeth cleaners, too.
