Sorry about the long post but it was quite a weekend.
This weekend my wife and I tried to go to Pt. Reyes area via
CA 37 as indicated on the Krebs Cycling map
(krebscycleproducts.comT1.htmlOpen ↗). Not knowing the
town of Vallejo AT ALL we were very lost. According to the
map we are supposed to ride over the "Freeway" looking
bridge but we couldnt find any way to get on the bridge. The
onramp we found explicitly stated "Bicycles prohibited" and
there was no way we were brave enough to get on a freeway?
The map also showed a way to get across the water over Mare
Island so we tried that. We were told by a very grumpy
official looking person that the island was contaminated, we
could go over at "our own risk" but that the "Northgate" was
closed and we couldnt get through. The official volunteered
that after spending some time on the island she vomited the
color of the yellow paint on the ground and that was enough
to deter us.
We stopped at the Ferry building to see if there was a way
across the water there but it was already getting late and
it was looking like our ill planned trip was going nowhere.
We talked to several people in the Ferry building (not
cyclists) that thought riding a bike on CA 37 was insane and
probably illegal. Dejectedly we biked all the way back home
(a 53 mile trip for "nothing"😉, showered and got in the car,
bikes in tow, to drive the route.
Going west on CA 37 we went over the scary bridge and took
the Mare Island exit. Thinking the grumpy official meant
"cars" coudnt get through, we wanted to take a look. The
gates were obviously meant to keep people out as well and
unless we either threw the bikes over the gate and crawled
on our bellies under the gate we didnt see anyway for us
to get through either. The signs warning about
contamination were also quite scary. Continuing along 37
we were debating whether we could bike the route. We ended
up thinking that if we could have found a way to get on,
we would have done it.
So we drove on to our destination, had a great dinner at the
Olema Inn. Next morning we biked a loop climbing Marshall
then to Novato then to Lucas Valley Rd and back to Olema. We
drove home via 101, to CA37. The two very narrow bridges on
the west side of Sears point were the only places we thought
we would absolutely not ride (maybe walk the bikes) but the
rest seemed doable although unpleasant (due to road
conditions and lots of very fast traffic). When we got back
to the bridge starting across to Vallejo were amazed to find
two things:
1) There was a "prohibited" sign right before the bridge but
it was missing a line as if the "bicycles" part had been
erased!?!?!
2) something hanging off the side of the bridge almost like
a separate walkway. This was only visible from the
eastbound side of 37 and it looked like possibly this was
the way across the "bicycles prohibited" bridge?
Consulting the map again it looked as if the way onto
that little passway from the Vallejo side might be
Wilson? but we couldnt figure out how you would get to
the west bound side of 37 once you got across? Maybe you
get dumped out at Mare Island and have to take the onramp
on the west bound side (where we did NOT see a "bicycles
prohibited" sign)?
Can anyone fill me in on what this is all about and if CA 37
is really ridable on a bicycle? How does one get on the
bridge from the Vallejo side and how does one get going west
bound on the other side of the bridge. How does a bicycle
navigate the narrow bridges on the west side of Sears Point?
How does one get on the east bound side in Novato and is CA
37 (both directions) worth riding or is it a near death
experience?
