Campy Group Best Value Selection

I am putting together all purpose bike for everything from commuting to
long day rides of 100-150 miles. I have purchased a Soma Smoothie ES
frame and am in the process of selecting the components. The goal is
to achieve the best balance between performance/function and cost.
Currently my selection includes the Campy
Veloce 10 speed triple group with upgrades in hubs and bottom bracket
to Centaur. Is there any reason that I should go to the full Centaur
group?....what do I gain other than having the Centaur name which
really doesnt matter for me? and what is Centaur Gray?

Thanks

* Forged & machined chainrings instead of pressed.
* Slightly more ergonomical gear levers (with the holes).
* Lighter rear derailleur and cassette.

It's grey in colour ...or gray in color :) That's all.

Look again after a few thousand miles.

The grey finish is quite similar to the stone Hematite. Nice
effect IMHO, depending on frame color. Adds a few dollars
per item.

Is it like the new DuraAce pedals? Mine resembled the Centaur Grays on
Campy's web site, and were a good color match for my brushed Ti frame, but
are now pretty scuffed up after 1500 miles. My gruppo's actually Centaur,
and I actually wanted the Grays when I built my bike a year and a half ago,
but I wasn't able to find them. The silver looks nice though, I have to say.

And to the original poster, I'm quite happy with my Centaur gruppo. My only
complaint is that the right shifter tends to make an annoying rattling noise
when I go over rough pavement. The alignment between the lever and the
little rubber knob was a bit off. Not sure if this is a design flaw or just
my bad luck. Shifting is quite smooth though, and the finish has lasted
quite well.

I also have a friend with a Veloce gruppo, and she's quite happy with it. If
you can afford and justify Centaur, might as well get it, but you'd probably
be just as happy with Veloce.

the Veloce rear mech has a lot of steel in it. The Centaur is all alloy.

With respect to your right lever, my left record one does the same thing, so
it may be mutual bad luck.

I'd go ll centaur, with the exception of the bearings in the levers, seems
to be 2000 chorus.
