Can I use Shimano derailers with Ergopower shifters

I'm trying to upgrade my bicycle without dropping too much money. I
was wondering whether it's possible to use Shimano derailers with
Campy Ergopower shifters. Anyone?

Yes. One method involves clamping the derailleur cable in a slightly
different way to alter the cable pull:

http://hubbub.com/articles_ergopower.html

I tried that and couldn't get the derailleur to shift across all 9 cogs,
but others have reported success here. Try a search in the archives for
hubbub.

What worked wonders for me was the shiftmate:

http://www.jtekengineering.com/shiftmate.htm

But since you're on a budget, I'd try the hubbub method first.

A front Shimano road derailleur has no problem with the pre-2006
trim-function Ergo shifters.

I'm using Hubbub with a DA der. and it works well, but I think spacing
the cable over just a hair farther would work better. It is for 10spd
shifters and a 9sdp drivetrain, though... if you want 10spd you'll
need the jtek. I'd recommend trying a washer under the tabbed washer
so that the cable ends up closer to the middle of the tab. If you like
to fiddle you could could cut and bend your own tabbed washer and get
it perfect.

In addition to the Shiftmate and Hubbub options already discussed,
Campy 10 and Shimano 8 have exactly the same cable pull, so throwing a
set of 2006 Veloce shifters on a Sora-equipped bike requires no
modification whatsoever. For the simplicity, it might be worthwhile to
"downgrade" from 9 to 8 if you're running Tiagra or 105-5500 or
Ultegra-6500.

My problem may have been that I tried it with a cheap Nashbar or
Performance cassette (probably rebranded SunRace). Fiddling with
derailleurs is one of my least favorite bits of maintenance, though, so I
think I'll stick with the shiftmate, which seems to tolerate my cheapness
with respect to consumables.

I think the only permutation not covered by the stock Jtek product
range is 10s ergo shifters + shimano der + 10s campy sprockets. A
call to Jay (the "J" in Jtek) get's you a custom part and a
bend-over-backwards to make the customer happy attitude, and just
about the fastest custom service I've ever seen, which I guess
involves some custom machining the diameter of one of the pulleys in
his winch/transmission mechanism. Surprisingly, he said no one had
asked for it yet. And I couldn't be (happier), having been spared the
expense of yet another Campy der.

I previously understood hubbub can lead to a requirement for miniscule
fudging w/ the shifter to tune out slight misalignment noise on some
sprockets, something I'd come to live with when running stock ultegra
10s sprockets on an otherwise Campy system, before going the Wheels
Manufacturing "accelerator 10" route, which works great. Jay (Jtek)
confirmed that the hubbub is pretty close, but not always on the
straight and narrow, and he seemed pretty genuine and on-the-level,
rather than just after my business So rather than spend time with a
weird, accidentily discovered cable attachment hack, I just splurged
on the Jtek.

I'm kindof surprised Shimano hasn't reengineered their der to break
the hubbub hack. MS would have taken care of that "problem" with an
emergency fix all-points-bulletin for immediate download, under the
guise of security, much as the current administration operates, or any
other run-of-the-mill shyster organization.

Hi there.

It is not my intention to hijack th op's thread and I hope you do not
mind me asking this but are you saying that if I were to have bought
10 speed Mirage Ergos I could have used them directly on my Shimano 8
spd wheels and drivetrain *Without* having to do any other
modifications?

If so *D***!!!!!!!!!!!!! As this is a family ng I will not type what
I'm thinking after having just spent $$$ on 9 spd Mirage Ergos, 9 spd
Tiagra Cassette and a 9 spd chain when I could have got the 10 spd
Mirage Ergos for the same price as I paid for the 9 spd ones.

I have another bicycle I want to upgrade to Mirage Ergo shifting. So
all I need to do is order 10 spd Ergos and I can use them on the 8
speed drive train? Correct?

If so I am a very happy camper.

Cheers from Peter

I installed Record 10 speed Ergo levers a couple of years ago as the
Dura-Ace ones made my hands numb (plus the Campagnolo ones look soooo much
better). After much research I bought the Jtek gizmo and it works perfectly
shifting my Shimano 9s Dura-Ace setup. I have since added a Centaur CT
front derailleur but cannot quite justify replacing my DA rear yet. Plus,
the 9 speed chains and cogs seem to last longer than 10s from what I have
read. Go Jtek and you will be fine.

Front yes, rear no for 9s or 10s..Mirage RDers are not expensive, work
great and work with any ERGO.

I have been running my Chorus 10 ergos with a LX rear der and 8s
cogset for a coupla years now. Shifts perfectly (don't forget to set
the limit screws properly).

How much does a Mirage RD cost? Wouldn't it be cheaper to get the jtek
thing? Other than ebay or craigslist, the cheapest *new* Mirage rear der I
found is about $60. A Jtek shiftmate *retails* at $35. What's not to like?

It violates the bicycle aesthetic of simplicity, elegance and clarity of
purpose.

Yeah, I know, sometimes the extra bits help. I got gadgets of all sorts hanging
off my mountain bike, but the 'cross bike is pure and nicer for it.

Sort of. If you get 2007 model 10s ergos, the rears will shift Shimano
8 perfectly, but the FD indexing will be sketchy. Pre-2007, the fronts
weren't indexed, so the different cable pull ratios didn't matter.
>From what I've read, you can get the 2007 indexed fronts to work by

experimenting with the cable attachment points, but it may be a little
sketchy.

And pre-2007, 10s weren't available below Veloce, which is quite a bit
more money than Mirage. In 2007, only Record and Chorus have non-
indexed fronts.
