Sorry if this has been covered previously but couldn't find a specific answer when searching.

I'm wondering if it's possible to build a Shimano 11-25 cassette (10 speed)? I train in hilly area and would like the 25 for going up, but spin out a 12 going down. The 11 would be better to keep a more constant power on the rolling hills when doing intervals.

If it IS possible, then how would I go about it, which combinations would be recommended, and where would I get the cogs/sprockets (depending on what you like to call them in your part of the world)? Is it possible to mix up existing cassettes ie combine and 11-23 with a 12-25?

Sure but it's expensive since you'll be buying two complete cassettes. The 21-23-25 cogs are on a common carrier so you'd put those on together and you can choose whichever other cogs you want from either of the two cassettes.

Not all hubs can take an 11tooth though so read up on that. If you have DA10 hubs it shouldn't be a problem though.

You can build your own by mixing up cassettes, but to add the 11T you will need to give up an inner cog because the 25T comes as part of a 3 cog set.. One way to do it is to take a 12-25 cassette (DA or Ultegra), leave out the 16T (and its spacer) and use the 11T with the 11T lockring. It should work.
 
Ok thanks, I must confess I'm surprised it's a combo not available.

The wheels are Mavic Ksyrium ES, presently with DA 11-23. I have another set of wheels with Ultegra 12-25 so I could combine the cassettes as you describe. I've only just started riding the 11-23 so will see how it goes... maybe I just need to get stronger ;)

I sure do like the 11 though :D
 
As Alan Jackson sings in "Talking Repairman's Blues" .... it'll just take money. It's really pretty easy. Good option would be to pick up a used 11 - something on eBay cheap. In all likelihood, the 11 won't be the worn cog and you can combine that.
 
My question, what size is the big ring? If 53, then a 12 should be sufficient. If a compact 50, then buy a 53/39 and stay with the 12-25.

Buying two 10speed casettes to make one is a very expensive exercise here in Aus.
 
I've been riding the 12-25 and spinning out the 12 t too often. Another advantage I've noticed since going to the 11-23 is, even on the flats, I'm tending to ride more in the centre of the cassette, which gives a better chain line. The disadvantage are the short, steep hills, where the 23 gives a cadence I'm not too happy with. Oh, sorry, edit required, yes big ring is 53. I already have 2 cassettes to combine if I want to experiment so cost is zero.

Well it was more a case of trying to use the existing parts if possible. I didn't initially even know if this was possible, but can now see I could swap in my Ultegra cassette if I feel I have the need and to experiment. Not sure how that "gap" will go. Even if it meant buying a second DA 12-25 it's probably not the end of the world if I can mix and match a bit. I'll probably try some climbing tomorrow (sprint intervals today so will see how I scrub up) and will have a better idea of how the 23 will go with my noodle legs :D
