Cutting Carbon Steerer Tube

I have a carbon 1-1/8 threadless fork. I want to leave about three
inches and fill them up with spacers. Does anything more than an inch
or so of spacers present any problems. We are talking about a road bike
that will be used for local 20-40 mile rides. Thank you.

I wouldn't think that it would be a problem. The combination of steer
tube and spacers is quite a bit more rigid, and sturdy, than the old
quill stems.

(donning Nomex biking shorts for another threaded vs. threadless flamewar)

I vote "do it"

It certainly will give you enough room to find out how long to cut it
later if needed.

With carbon steerers you should not use more spacers than the diameter
of the steerer tube, so that's 28.6mm.

Yes, that's the published spec of several fork manufacturers, probably wise
to follow that.

Carbo steerer? Manufacturers all have a maximum of spacers under the
stem. We use 1.5 inches for 1 1/8inch steeres(40mm).

Reynolds and most others use 1.5 inches for 1 1/8inch and 1.5 CM for 1
inch.

My made in Taiwan Performance all carbon fork has 2 cm of spacers under
the stem and 1.5 cm above the stem. On a 58 cm frame. Probably 3,000
miles on it in two years. Its just fine. Its been on far longer than
20-40 mile rides.

Answering my own question. Per fork manufacturer, Wound Up, there
should be no more than 44 mm of spacers. Thanks for the the helpful
replies.
