Police have closed London's largest park after a man was stabbed to death
this morning

The man - who was aged about 50, was attacked just 200 metres inside
Richmond Park, close to the East Sheen Gate just after ten oclock

He was taken to a west London hospital where he died three hours later.

A man has been arrested near the scene.

He was described as a "cyclist" on LBC radio's brief news broadcast. I
don't know any more details.

I tried to enter from Kingston gate at 1pm. Was told it was a serious
assault. Read later he died at 1pm. Sad.

This evening the word was he was a cyclist.

Just to my 2p in ... **** off. Get an understanding. I go through there
every day. My family don't want me to contract in Iraq doing
telecommunications. Yet they are are happy for me to do it in London.

I don't expect to get murdered by some crazy nutter who has no purpose in
Richmond Park.

You Are An Idiot.

A cyclist was stabbed to death in one of London's largest parks at
mid-morning yesterday.
The victim, aged about 50, was on his bike 200 metres inside Richmond park,
in the south-west of the city, just after 10am, when his assailant struck.

He was taken to hospital and died three hours later.

The dead man has been identified, but police were waiting until his next of
kin had been informed before releasing his name.

A man arrested nearby in connection with the attack has been taken into
custody.

Detectives closed the 1,000-hectare park, famous for its herds of fallow and
red deer, and people inside the grounds at the time of the stabbing were not
allowed to leave until they had been questioned.

Forensic experts were trawling the crime scene, close to East Sheen Gate.

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said: "The entire park has been closed and we do
not know at present when it will reopen."

One Richmond resident, who did not want to be named, said: "Although there
would have been fewer children around because the schools are back, the park
is used by thousands of people every day, from motorists driving through, to
dog walkers, runners and cyclists."

.... but we're not in Iraq.

But speaking of both Iraq and cycles, I hear that there was a peace demo in
NYC at the weekend that included a contingent of cyclists of whom about 40
were arrested on trumped up traffic violations. They story was on C-Span,
but I can't find any confirmation.

I heard reports of 100 arrests at NYC critical mass, but no link, just
intarweb hearsay.

It coincided with the Republican Party Convention, ergo Plod cried
"Security!" and arrested anyone in range who looked like a Ruthless
Bomb-Throwing Anarchist. In the case of CM, this is everyone ;-)

Without wishing to sound too heartless, is there any reason to believe
that the attack had anything to do with the fact he was cycling? If so
it's on topic here; if not, however sad, it isn't really.

Some reports say it's a jogger, some say it's a cyclist. The OP didn't know
whether it was because of cycling, but it was a cyclist, so on topic. In
fact, I cycle there everyday, so very on topic. Where would you post it?
alt.richmond.park.murders?

Seems that it was a robbery gone wrong, but why rob someone who is either
jogging or cycling?

Sorry.

Also, I don't have a wife, so I don't know what you mean.

Very much on topic for me. I was intending to do my regular route round the
park this morning. To know that the ppark was closed was v.useful plus
reassring to know the suspect was caught and i need not fear a loose mad man
when next i go round.....

Unless the murderer is an anti-cyling nutter, and thus it's uniquely
cyclists that are at risk rather than users of Richmond Park in general,
then the story has nothing specifically to do with cycling. It's still
of interest, though, and it doesn't hurt for it to be posted here.

They've had a few pieces on the cyclist protests - especially the guy
with the pavement-printing bike.
