    A cycling facility has appeared in Durham which is probably supposed to
    allow cyclists to make use of an otherwise one-way street in the
    contraflow direction. Nothing unusual in that. However, I think they may
    have overlooked something:

    Just in case there is any confusion that this is a cycle route here's
    the sign closer up:

    See, it's on the NCN, just not cycleable.

    Anyway, once you get the end of this short lane, illegally, you get the
    joy of a free lollipop:

    I'm not sure if the raised blob id defined in the guidelines.

    BTW - the person who painted those road markings - have they ever
    /seen/ a bicycle??

    No idea, I've only recently noticed the facility and this was the first
    chance to take a picture. Last time I contacted the council to enquire
    about the whys and wherefores of a different lane I just got a copy of a
    map with a bit of highlighter pen added that didn't tell me anything at
    all about the cycle lane but told me loads about some council officers.

    Come on, to paint a proper bicycle they'd have to make the lane a decent
    width! Still, interesting trail on their bike.

    Yes, this paved ramp, with short switchbacks near the top out of view,
    gives access to the centre of Durham as well as the continuation of
    route 14. You'll notice that there are no signs indicating shared use
    though.
