Frame suggestions

Theft is more or less a non-issue for me. This bike is never going to
be locked up, it will just be used for rides. Anyway, I'm looking for
something with a little more bling, as my legs aren't strong enough to
do all the talking.

A guy on my team has the leader and really likes it. May not last
forever since it's Aluminum, but it's a good price on a hot looking
frame.

Nix the integrated headset model.

I have a Leader frame, an LD-715. I'm not sure if they still offer it
but I bought it one Christmas when they dropped their Ebay price to
$99. I had an early carbon fiber frame that I wanted to replace.
Anyhow, it has about 5000 miles on it now and I'm quite pleased with
it.

Since you asked for suggestions, you may checkout Surly frames. I
recently helped a friend build up a Surly Crosscheck frame. They're
steel (extra 1.5 lbs), have room for HUGE tires and fenders, horizonal
dropouts in case you someday decide to go fixed. Not that you have to
go with wide tires and a fixed gear but it's nice to have that option.

ugly bikes have become.

Same here. IMO, it's just plain bugly, even among "modern" frames. It
kinda looks like some of the stuff that shows up on Chucksbikes.com for
under $100.

Hell, for $5,000, who cares about durability or repairability. Some of
those scary light CF frames with integrated posts and proprietary
everything probably have a shorter life expectancy than the Chuck's
Bikes specials. The idea of taking a hacksaw to an integral part of
the frame (the seat tube) to size the bike is mind blowing to me -- but

like an earlier poster, i have one of the cheaper leader frames--about
$100. i've had it for a couple years, and have a couple thousand miles
on it. it's totally fine. a non-issue ever since i've owned it. if i
were going to do it over, though, i'd probably get the cheapie nashbar
"framé", just because that doesn't have any decals applied and i like
the more subtle look.

By the time I get a fork and headset, the Leader is almost twice as
much. Scattante might not have much curb appeal back in The World, but
over here I might be able to pass it off as some exclusive Italian kit.
Once I peel off the Made In China stickers of course.

Plus I have a red saddle and bar-tape lying around!

I had one of their cheap ones (716 I think) built up as a beater bike
for a while. It worked just fine. As for the Nashbar Framé, I'm saving
the clean stealth look for my track bike. Plus I don't like the 1"
fork. For some reason I am allergic to the idea of a shim in the stem.

I find the Leader far ugler than the other frame. To each his own. At
any rate, they are both commodity level, Asian made welded aluminum
frames.They might even be made in the same factory. Is the "Leader"
logo worth $130-175 more (the "Scattante" comes with fork and HS, the
"Leader" does not)?

Check www.chucksbikes.com . He has a few inexpensive frames that might
also work for you.

At $99, Chris King can complain all he wants about the non-durability
of integrated headsets. At $99, the frame becomes a throw-away item
compared to the outrageous cost of a Chris King headset.
