I'm looking into buying a nice hardtail. So far I like the Gary Fisher Tassajara (I found the '03 for $550 at a nearby shop), and it has nice components and fork. The Giant Iguana is said to be heavy and the components aren't as good as the Tassajara.

Any other suggestions for bikes in this price range.

Thanks.

I have the '03 Tassajara, and absolutley love it. I think for the money, you are extremly hard pressed to find a bike that has the level of Components. I especially like the genesis geometry. It fits me well. The only thing I didn't like was the Titec seat. It was too uncomfortable. But So far, with 150 hard miles on the bike since the end of july, I have yet to have any complaint.

Fisher hands down... I like that they switched to the Rock Shock Polit from the Monitou Six... comsidering the Marlin comes with a Six

I know two people with the Gary Fisher bike, they both love it. Dont have any experience of the Giant though.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the input guys. Now I'm stuck between the Tassajara and the Specialized Rockhopper. All the experienced people (here and at the LBSs) tell me that the Tassajara is a better bike ascending and descending and that the Rockhopper performs in tight situations. But I rode both (didn't get a good chance to test it where it counts) and the RH feels better. But the components suck, so I'm in the process of getting a quote for getting upgraded components on it... I'll keep you guys informed.

Thanks again

Just bought a Norco Charger and can't stop raving about it...should be in your price range and it beats the Iguana for components. Haven't seen the Gary Fisher or the Specialised so can't compare to those.

My first real bike was a rockhopper. Specialized has been very good to me. I broke the frame, after doing a week of huge jumps, and specialized replaced it no questions asked. They also threw in a new Headset, seatpost and Fork, because the new frame had different sizes for these components. I personally think that Specialized makes a very high quality product, but Fisher does as well. I'd say go with whatever feels good to you.

I bought a Fisher Tassajara disc about 4 months ago and I absolutely love it. Fisher has a lifetime warrenty on their frames and decent components for the price. If you can try to get an '03 because the '04's have the same components so you might get a deal.

while your at it, take a look at the raleigh M80 disc, diamondback topanga disc, and iron horse rogue. they are all in that price range and have exellent componentry. I have yet to try them, but i hear good things.
