I turned off my spam filters and did some counting just for kicks.
Out of the last 25 threads posted to this group, 9 of them were spam posted form Google. That's what, 40%? That's up 100% from January of this year.
All the more reason to kill-file posts from Google.
My newsreader is unique in that it can be set to ignore the first-in-thread posted from Google until somebody responds to them. That way I see most of the regulars posting from Google.
I sure enjoyed the good 'ol days when you didn't have to visually or manually sort this [censored].

Of course the credit card company is on it, but this sucks.

If you do any online purchases suggest using the one time use account numbers you can go to your credit card site and generate. Takes an extra minute or two but improves security.

Thanks, Pete. I have been lucky till now. I'm lucky I found it when I did. Well, someone's lucky, I wouldn't have to pay for it. Still, it's creepy someone picked my card to scam.

I don't use AmEx, but since two others I do use have the one time use account number thing, AmEx should have it as well. For the others, you log on to the credit card site and select to generate a one time use account number. The site generates the account number, expiration date and verification number which you then use where ever you need to. Unfortunately it isn't terribly practical to use them at physical merchants and credit card numbers get stolen there as well.

AMEX used to offer "private payments" which is the one time numbers. They discontinued them about 2 years ago. I only use my AMEX card for credit card purchases (I reap great benefits from this) and have never had any trouble with them.

It's not their fault, of course. Someone somewhere with access to purchase data went on a spending spree with my info. Could happen even with a regular in-store purchase, as Pete said.

Letsee.. I put my utility payments on it as well as my cell phone (all paid automatically monthly on my AMEX), my cable bill, gym membership, yada yada yada. I LOVE my AMEX card. Keeps me out of debt, and provides some great perks.

Yeah, I pretty much stick with them for the Costco rebate, and hardly ever use cash anymore. So I was at a loss today, wandering around without my card. I even wrote a check at Costco.

Online purchases with established vendors is safer than using a CC at a retail outlet. Most of the problems come from all the spyware people have installed on their computers, or other carelessness, but not the in the actual transaction to/from/by the online vendor.
