Yep, and there have been a number of cases where large retailers have
had their computer systems compromised as well. Rather makes you want to
print out some of those one time use credit cards to take with you when
you go shopping. Would be a bit of a hassle having to show the untrained
folks at the register how to manually enter the card info, but at least
it would protect you from having the card number stolen and reused.
It's really sad how little training the folks at the register get. I
once had to walk one cashier through the entire phone authorization
process when their computer was screwed up and wouldn't take my credit
card. Had to point out the little sticker on the side of the register
with the 800 number and their merchant number, hand them a piece of
paper and pen to just down the approval code, etc. Sad...
