Most Win 3.x applications runs just fine on XP, and even a lot of smaller Win
1.x and Win 2.x applications runs just fine.

What your thinking about is probably the IA-64 version of XP (64-bit Windows
systems doesn't support the WoW - Windows on Windows 16-32 bit emulation and
thinking layer).

Normal IA-32 (32-bit Intel) versions however is no problem (generally; you can
always come across exceptions to the rules as normal).

For some amusement (and perhaps nostalgia for some) I bring you screen dumps of
the "fantastic" calc.exe from Windows 1.0 and 2.0 executing on my normal XP
(IA-32) system. :-)

tweaking; runs either too slow or too fast depending on settings,
and has some screen refresh weirdness.

Wow...the dialog box looks the same as they do now.

Oldest version of Windows I ever dealt with was a 2.x...it came as a
shell for an early CD-ROM encyclopedia program.

Unfortunately, my entire life fit on one freaking floppy disk! All the WP
program files, scripts, invoices, labels, etc.

Thanks, but too late. When I bought the new machine I finally bit the mouse
pad and started from scratch with Word. (Ironically, I ordered the computer
with a new version of WordPrefect {sic}, but it wouldn't recognize/convert
my old WP files, so I dug out an old copy of Office that I'd never used
before.)

Old Epson FX died a few years ago; some guy just GAVE me a dusty Panasonic
he wasn't using, and so far it's worked well (albeit SLOW!).

Wouldn't kill me to switch to a cheap ink- or bubble-jet, I suppose, as I
don't /really/ need to use tractor-fed paper.

When I was in Vegas the other week we were using rented computers and we
were having a problem running WordPerfect 5.0 which our writers love. We
forced the guys to use Word and one of the guys would call me over every 20
minutes because he would do some key stroke from WordPerfect that would turn
on some bizarre feature of Word. It got easier as the week progressed but
each time he did a new one it would take me awhile to figure out how to turn
off the feature. It was particularly stressful when he needed to print out
a joke for rehearsal, like NOW. I think my IT cohort at the show upgraded
them to the latest Windows version of WP after we got back.

Dear Rick,

About a dozen models at www.okidata.com if you click on
products and then impact printers.

Darned useful for spitting out mailing labels a few at a
time, too, with information to paste onto file folders.
