Is there a standard way to tie up a trunk rack?

Hi, I have a trunk rack that is similar to this:

Except it doesn't have any of the clamps - just rubber ridges that can
hold two bikes in place (well that's the theory). I used bungee cords
to secure my bike to it and it was mostly me tying up a couple of
cords - moving it up and down - then securing whichever side I felt
was loose - I ended up with a very haphazard looking tie down and it
never got to the point where it felt truly locked down. My question:
Is there a standard tying pattern that has proven safest? Should I be
using something other than standard bungee cords? Also, if I were to
tie up two bikes how do I keep them from scraping the paint off of
each other?
