Oooooh, I just realized that we can't have Lance running
for president. Whichever party he doesn't choose to
affiliate himself with will start bashing him for alleged
drug use (after all, he DID use steroids during his cancer
treatment), and his riding Shimano would be an even hotter
    issue than it is now.

He's not old enough anyway. You must be at least 35 to run
for president. Hmm, maybe in a few years.

No, I believe the wording is that you just have to be 35 to
be *elected* president (or is it to *serve* as president).

Eisenhower, Johnson, Carter and Clinton were not rich and
could not make the election on their money alone. Johnson
had land, but wasn't cash rich in any sense.

Johnson didn't start out rich, but his connections were
sufficient to get a broadcasting license. Was the station
called WLBJ?? I may just be imagining that. A broadcasting
licence in those days, or now, is very lucrative.

I don't recall Nixon was particularly wealthy, although Pat
may have had more than just one cloth coat.

Please show me where Bush inherited his money.

    Without checking the biographies:

Both of these guys went to Yale. So far as I remember,
Kerry's family was well to do (not like owning a major food
company, though). Bush's grandfather was a senator, and a
Yale trustee. You generally are made a trustee when you have
money you might give the university, although the political
    connections may have been sufficient.

Clearly, Kerry is currently wealthier, but both are wealthy.

Lady Bird had the broadcasting stations and was from a
    wealthy family.

It's alleged that was a motivating force for LBJ in marrying
her, as it gave him resources for higher political office.

Kerry has relations to the Forbes family. A prominent and
wealthy New England family, and I think he (his family)
actually owns one or two of the Elizabeth Islands off MA
which I sail around every summer. Worth a zillion dollars
    right now.

Marriage to a Heinz gives Kerry a lot more resources for
higher public office too, but he could have managed it
    on his own.

Using wealth to negatively portray Bush seems a rather poor
choice of characters in this particular race.

Actually the allegations are in the bio on LBJ published
last year (vol 2 with vol 3 being written right now). The
author's name escapes me at the moment.

Got good reviews and showed LBJ to be quite the calculating
political mind. Some fine traits at coalition building, and
a desire to improve society, but utterly ruthless, and not
at all shy about using and manipulating people and power.

Lady Bird seemed way too classy for him if you ask me.

You're right, Keith. How dare anyone *not* volunteer?

[snip pile of [censored] straw man]

I admire him for not volunteering for service in Vietnam. I
was just supplying some facts in response to someone
claiming he volunteered for overseas service.

:-) Whereas most presidents have been inept political

mean, a few have, sure, but...

If we start backtracking, making unprovable allegations
about every president from our least-favorite political
parties, things are going to get meaningless.

... even by the standards of these off-topic conversations!

"Yeah, and what about Ulysses S. Grant?"

I don't know how strong the case for Johnson marrying Lady
Bird as a means of gaining power over her wealth, and
especially her chain of radio stations, was made in the John
Caro biography (actually volume 1 I believe). I haven't read
the book (I don't find Johnson a President of particular
interest). I only read a summary of it, where the
    implication was made.

I'll leave it as an exercise for you, if interested, in
determining if the allegations are unprovable or compelling
    enough or not.

I really think you shouldn't be making these comments about
not reiterating "allegations" Frank. The entire content of
all these anti-Bush threads here (about our "least favorite
political party"😉 have been nothing but unprovable
    allegation.

Strange to suddenly have concerns for such standards.

Yep, he has an Ottrott and another, less expensive Serotta
(I think a Colorado, not sure). When I was shopping for
bikes, I refused to even test-ride an Ottrott, they're so
expensive. (I actually think Serotta TI frames are priced on
the high side, relative to other makers like Seven).

But anyhow, so what? Lots of people at his age and level of
success have nice toys. He's far from the only one. I've
seen several Sevens and Calfees on rides recently. Do you
know how many bikes Robin Williams has? He has an Ottrott, a
Seven Alta, a Serotta Legend, and God knows how many bikes.
Wouldn't you do the same if you had the money and the garage
space? I sure as hell would.
