  1. Hubby thinks macaroni and cheese is just a sidedish (boxed
or real). I think it's a meal with salad or a veggie. ???
It's not so different from spaghetti, IMHO, and we eat that
as a meal quite often. Tara

PS FYI Kraft Sponge Bob Mac & Ch is the same size box but
only has 2/3 the content! Now I know why it was the same
price as regular Mac & Cheese :-)

Oh, it's a meal alright. No bout a doubt it. A little
broccoli and you're all set! Oh, BTW, would hubby think it's
a meal if you added ham in the mac & cheese????

When I make mac n cheese, that's what's for dinner. End of
subject. Have a salad and/or a vegetable on the side, that's
fine. I've seen mac n cheese as a side dish and it strikes
me as weird. It doesn't really go with what I would think of
    as main dishes.

They had to make up for the cost of licensing and marketing

It's also a meal here. We add a variety of other things to
liven it up: diced ham, cooked broccoli, diced red and green
    peppers, etc.

Macaroni cheese has too much protein in it to be a
    sidedish for us.

So do we, although I did enjoy pasta as a separate course in
    parts of Italy.

Make it from scratch with lots of eggs, milk and cheese and
it's a main dish... use a packet with fake everything and
    it's a side!

How about those cafeteria-style places that offer two

brussels sprouts, cole slaw, potato salad, beans, or...
    mac and cheese.

It's a good side dish for families with kids who are picky
eaters. Almost all kids will eat it and that leaves the
parents guilt free when they fix some exotic main that the
kids wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole.

Or throw in a can of tuna or some browned ground beef with a
    bit of onion.

It's as weird as using any other pasta in place of potato or
rice. Haven't done it since my kids were real kids, but I
liked Mac & cheese with any pork... chops, ham, italian
    sausage. Mmmmm.

I always found it funny - still do - since living in the
South for 33 years, mac & cheese is considered a "vegetable"
(i.e. side dish) on menus in most diners down here. To me,
that's like Tara's example of spaghetti, perhaps with
meatballs, or maybe lasagna, is a "side dish".

My mom always served mac & cheese as the main dish,
sometimes with diced ham or sliced smoked sausage added
to it. She'd add a salad and that was the meal, take it
    or leave it.

I've noticed that many places have stopped saying you get
two "vegetables" and have started saying you get two
"sides". Usually there aren't any veggies; it's all mac and
cheese, rice casserole, etc. I don't follow the low-carb
diets, but it's nice to be able to get vegetables again!

I had never heard of such a thing, mac and cheese as a side
dish, plus I didn't grow up on that blue box style of mac
and cheese. I think those cafeteria type restaurants are
more of a southern thing. First time I recall seing that was
a Boston Market chicken kind of place.

I can't think what main dish I would find looking for a side
of mac n cheese. Certainly not chicken. That's why God
    invented mashed potatoes.

Spaghetti with pesto makes a great starchy side dish.

I had a funny thing happen a week or two ago. We have a
    large Korean computer store/gasoline station/bus stop/fried
chicken/Chinese food buffet (yes, really). The Chinese food
is great and I often stop to get my fix. I was there a week
or so ago and among the General Tso's chicken, the beef and
broccoli, lo mein, egg rolls and so forth was - you guessed
it - macaroni and cheese. I said to the Asian man
replenishing the buffet, "er, macaroni and cheese? Is that
Chinese?". Trouble was, he couldn't speak English so the
question remains unanswered. One of life's mysteries.

I was born and grew up in north-western Kentucky, now
live in Missouri. In both places, mac and cheese is a
side dish, most often as the starch side, not
"vegetable". It is the starch of choice with fried fish
and some baked fish entree's. In the home, we had it with
    salmon patties as well.

In St. Louis, just about every diner and cafeteria will
offer it as a side when fish is the main course.

In my experience, mac and cheese was only a meal for
    the children.

Different places do different things; when I hear the word
barbecue, I still think mutton with a vinegar-based "sauce".
That's what was normal where I grew up. Can't stand the
stuff hear; meat with burned ketchup, uhhhgggg. Different
stroke.... now, time to make salmon patties, mac and cheese
    and a "mess" of greens.

The favorite meal of a long-ago girlfriend was teriyaki
flank steak accompanied by mac & cheese. The combination was
nothing special to me, but it wasn't bad, either.

(My current girlfriend likes pasta and she likes cheese, but
she can't get over a stereotype that mac & cheese is food
    for white trash.)
