I like Fuji. The Outlander 29RC. Its full suspension, awesome components SRAM, great wheel set, and its a 29'er.

Specialized, Trek, Kona, Giant, GT, Rocky Mountain, Norco would be the biggest/eaasiest to find brands

Gary Fisher who is now owned by Trek. The Godfather of mountain bikes.

if you dont want to fork out thousands try forge bikes at target.com. they are spec'd at the same range as mid level trek's. also try bikes direct .com, they carry dawes usa, motobecane and windsor bikes and are compared to top end racers from trek, specialized and others. trust me the prices are affordable for those of us with small pockets!!!😄

I would go with Merida for cross country biking.

I wouldn't buy a expensive MTB because, as the term implies, your going to be trashing it off road, so why pay $1,000 or more for something your going to break...eventually, and sooner rather then later, as compared to a road bike. I have MTB, though it only has about 8,000 miles on it and about 1,200 were off road, but it was those 1,200 miles that beat the thing into many repairs, and this is XT stuff!

If you're only just getting into it, then why not grab a secondhand bike so your initial outlay isn't too much, just to get a feel of whether you want really want to get into it or not, instead of having an expensive new bike sitting in the garage collecting dust? You can then plan an upgrade in the future.

In terms of "coolness", refreshing/recycling an old bike with (cheaply sourced) parts to create something truly unique and stylish. Old chromoly frames have been "in the thing" over the last few years. I was lucky enough to be given a MTB with a decent enough frame which I'm gradually pimping with better parts. Plans are to ride it for another 5 years, after which time I'll know exactly what sort of riding I want to do and should have the money to afford it. Currently it's rail trails and XC. You can join your local Yahoo Groups Freecycle to find free bikes. I've done quick repairs on some of these bikes and then sold on to help fund my MTB project. It's very worthwhile plus you'll learn heaps about bicycle maintenance while you're at it...

There are many specialized mountains like Trek, Kona, Giant, GT, Rocky Mountain but I really likes Fuji much more for Mountain Bikes Brands.

I had some price concerns and a very limited choice in the local shop, and I wanted a brand new one, so I went for the best brand with the best price, end up buying a nice Raleigh, mojave 2.0 Now I am very happy with it and probably I need some years before I need to improve components. I think it's blatantly obvious that I'm a GT fan. I owned a GT Pro Performer as a kid, and now as an adult I own a GT mountain bike, and so does my wife. Yes, admittedly, I am a GT "fanboy."

A lot of people will tell you now that GT is owned by Dorel Industries (Pacific Cycles) that their quality has taken a fall, but I will tell you from experience that I absolutely disagree. My wife and I have owned our Avalanches (1.0 and 3.0) for 2.5 months now, and they have taken an absolute beating over some pretty rough terrain. They have not even sweated. They are very good bikes.

Other brands owned by Dorel Industries (Pacific Cycles) are Cannondale, Schwinn, and Mongoose. All of these other brands make some very competent bicycles. No, I'm not talking about the Schwinns and Mongooses you find in Walmart, either. Those bikes aren't even mentioned on the manufacturer sites.

I will give you a list of mountain bike manufacturers I know of. As for what's best and what's worse, I can't tell you that, and it's doubtful anyone here as owned or ridden all of them and can make that decision, either.

IMO, the Giant XTC1 is one of the best values on the market, coming in at around $900-$1000. It is light by mountain bike standards, and the componentry is comparable with the best in its class. Had I been able to find a Giant XTC1, I may well have gotten it over my GT Avalanche. Be that as it may, I'm very happy with my purchase.
