Nice Memories: Indurain overtakes Armstrong in TDF Time Trial



BigMig destroyed the field that day - much like he did in Luxembourg in 1992.

Phenomenal.
 
What a beautiful moment. I haven't been much of a fan of Armstrong since I heard of the troubles between him and Robbie McEwen.

I remember that! Lance was like 22 then...and Indurain was in his prime. Lance was also wearing the rainbow jersey wasn't he? That was classic Indurain..crush them in the time trials...and then follow the wheels in the mountains. Did you see how fast Indurain went up the road after he passed Lance?

Indurain is one of my all-time favorites!

This is not the trooth. For example did he rode best time on final climb to La Plagne in the Tour 1995 (stage 9), Nobody could follow him (Zuelle had 5 Min. advantage when starting the final climb).

The day after he was 2nd in alpe d huez behind pantani (who rode record time to alpe d huez with madeleine and croix the fer in his legs, faster than armstrong in time trial). zuelle and riis were the only ones who could follow indurains back wheel and did not do any work ...

Do you remember legandary mountain stage to sestriere, when indurain was 2nd behind chiapucci?

Also he once attacked succesful on flat terrain :eek: (Stage 7 Tour 1995 to Charlroi), which we have not seen by much tour champions. Bruyneel could win this stage, because he did not make any work in the wind ...:

Indurain was only once 1st in a mountain stage. But he was very often 2nd and very often rode best time on final climb. In opposite to Armstrong he very often left the mountain stages to others. And he did it also in an other way than Armstrong.

The stage with Chiapucci...Indurain did not attack on a mountain with Chiapucci. Indurain attacked on a downhill section and broke away. Chiappucci bridged up and together they survived the climbs as they headed to the finish.

Indurain was a very good climber...but he was as good a time trialer as we have seen in Tour history.

I watched all of Indurain's Tour wins...and I always hoped that the other riders had a chance to compete...but usually after a long time trial(like in your video) it was quickly obvious that the others had no chance of victory. The Tour usually ended after the first long time trial..with the exception being 1991. Indurain won that Tour by attacking Lemond and Bugno(with Chiappuci)...on a long break away to Val Louron. Later, in the Alps, Indurain simply followed Bugno up the final climbs. Bugno didn't have the strength to ride away.

The first world's champion time trialist was in 1994 - Boardman.

When did world champion time trialists start wearing their jerseys on ITT stages? Same year?

Olano is the only guy to have won both - not the same year.

Sestrieres, 1992.

Indurain was third at 1.45.

Franco Vona was 2nd at 1.34

You are right. The length of the stage was 254,5 km and with following colls:

Col de Saisies (1633 m)
Cormet de Roselend (1968 m)
Col de l Iseran (2770 m)
Col de Mont Cenis (1746 m)
Final climb to Sestriere (2020 m)

Chiapucci attacked already in the climb to Col de Saisies and he was 1st at all colls. Indurain had to react and to follow him (maybe you remember when?) He got the yellow jersey that day and kept it until Paris.

So he was a very good climber too, if he was 3rd in such stage. In time trial nobody could compete with him. In the mountains only the very good mountain specialists were (sometimes) a bit better. But my example of climb to la Plagne in 1995 shows, that he rode the (much) fastest time in that climb - nobody could follow him.

Not correct - sorry. Chiapucci attacked at the 1st col and survived alone to the finish ...

I am speaking of the stage to Val Louron in the 1991 Tour. They finished together. Chiapucci outsprinted Indurain at the finish. Chiappuci bridged up to Indurain after Indurain's attack. Go watch the tape.
