Can anyone tell me how much the OS charge for the use of
their maps on a website. I want to use them to illustrte the
routes of some walks.
P.S. I don't anticipate making any money from this
website ! Thanks.

I have done this:

Which I hope complies, though the site is not
officially live yet.For other maps you need the paper map copying license, of
which I know little as it costs money ;-).I'm off to the Brecon Horseshoe next week, anyone know of a
list of waypoints for the walk? I think I have mapped it
from a walk description but would like to check. What's the
next cheapest way of putting waypoints in to Garmin 12xl
after the manual method? I do have a data cable.AJH

! Thanks. If I read the condition correctly it says:
You are authorised to download a maximum of 10 images from
the Get-a-map service for use on your web pages, providing
the following credit appears below all images ...snip....Therefore, surely you can download ten images, your wife can
download ten, your dog can download ten etc.It does not say you cannot display more than 10 images on
your website; even if it did ten images could be yours, ten
your wife's and ten your dog's etc.I honestly don't think they are going to get too worried
about a small number of images on a small site. It would be
different for a full blown commercial site. -

Yes Jim, I did read that and quite a few other pages on
the OS website.. However, it isn't clear to me how much
it costs unless I am only using a maximum of 10 images.
As I currently have some 30+ walks written up this is
not suitable -

That's proved not to be the case - they get very upset! Look
on Google for copyright discussions in this ng. They also
have strong views on maps drawn by you based, in their
opinion, on information derived from OS maps.At least one member of this ng has been forced to take down
such maps!Stuart

subscribers to this newsgroup have had in the past. It
would be nice to be naive and idealistic, but
unfortunately the OS are not so forgiving. I had the
misfortune to visit their HQ in person once and they were
indeed miserable and intolerant. Power has gone to their
heads. They don't understand the meaning or significance
of the phrase "non-profit".Paul

I stand corrected (not being aware of previous problems) but
I would still argue the condition is too vague. With no
definition of website etc.For example I have seven different websites with
different domain names all on the same server; as a uk
domain name only costs about £1.99 a year it would be
cheaper to have separate domain names for each area
rather than pay a licence. -
Apologies, your posting didn't indicate you'd have lots of
images. OS allows free use for a limited number of images,
of limited size, just as long as you plaster your site with
copyright text.If you start having lots of images the OS will start taking
exception.Jim

additional map, per year. Each map section can be up to 50 1km squares in size.
Clearly the OS don't care whether your website is for
profit or not.Paul

You're not the only one in the same situation. The OS have
no consideration for "non-profit" uses of their data.
Obviously never occurred to them that it might have a useful
advertising value.Paul

believe), on the OS map OL12, at roughly SN692224, there are
two contour lines going by the number 250, in the direct
vicinity of a 353m spot height. Clearly these are not 250m
contour lines, they are 350m. Roy claims they are an
intentional mistake.Paul

gpsvisualizer.comgpsvisualizer.comOpen ↗
It's only 30-metre resolution, but it does provide a free
background for plotting tracks on. I use it for this
purpose, see for example:hopton.dsl.pipex.comdummer.htmlOpen ↗
It's perhaps just a little better than nothing <g>. The
example on my site is not showing Visualizer at its best, I
reduced the file size by quite a lot for the web.Regards, Nick.
