Actually, don't be sorry; your post couldn't have come at a better time

me. I'm desperately trying to get into a clinic for a possible
life-threatening thing and no one will help me. If you call a clinic and
tell them you have no insurance, no job, no vehicle, they won't even try
to
give you a number to a place that *may* be able to take you. Yesterday I
called the Department of Health and they're only open Mon. - Thursday.
Sigh. It figures. So, anyway, I appreciate your post and I'm going to
act
on it.

When I went to a cancer support group (almost 10 years ago now) that held
their meetings at a hospital, there was a hospital employee who always was
at the meetings. She liked to hog time telling you about herself and her
job, so I was forced to learn that her job was to coordinate people who had
no insurance with perhaps HMO companies who would provide free services, and
also companies that would provide very expensive drugs as well. As I
recall, these were not referrals from hospital patients, but calls from
persons in the community. You might talk to a hospital to see what you can
find out.

Socialized medicine is all we need. I am not willing to pay for
someone else's health if the cost of their care comes out of my
pocket. True, there are some people that cannot afford insurance, but
their needs should be taken care by volunteer groups and the church -
yes the church. I came from a poor hardworking family and through
hard work and determination, I was able to work my way thru college
and land a job that afforded me the "luxury" of paying for my own
health care. I believe that the opportunities are there for people to
do the same. If they take advantage of the opportunities, good for
them, if not, I do not want to pay for them.

And to use the latest buzz word, ILLEGAL ALIEN (regardless of where
they came from), I definitely do not want to pay for medical insurance
for somebody who is in this country illegally.

My two cents.

Two cents doesn't get you much these days. :-) Actually, most of what you
said i agree with, although I'm not totally opposed to socialized medicine.
Where I work the employee pays only a token amount for their health
insurance, but I see that changing. The entire medical industry has gotten
totally out of hand. If it hadn't, there wouldn't be a need for insurance
because fees and prices would be managable.

As to illegal aliens from all origins, if it were feasible, I would be for
shipping them all back to where they came from. Unfortunately, it would be
far too costly. It's one thing to help the poor. It's quite another to be
forced to offer the same thing to people who don't belong here legally.

Everytime there is a topic regarding insurance I always post something along
these lines.
This January 1st, my monthly insurance rose from $175 per month to $750 per
month. (This is in addition to the medicare monthly cost.) This new figure
of $750 is to maintain solvency in my medical insurance company whick I
consider very well administered.. If this payment/plan would include all
persons who do not have medical care, they'd have to dig me a hole; I'd not
have enough to buy food. $750 is for paying customers to keep it afloat; I
cannot afford to support non-paying customers, but I think that is not too
far in the future.

Dang, no wonder I don't have any insurance! My hubby gets his through his
company, but pays about $300 per month. To add me on would be another $300
a month, um, no go, can't do it. He goes to the doctor frequently because
of work-related injuries (he's a carpenter) so he *has* to have insurance.
I never go to the doctor, no matter what. It just so happens, now, that I'm
in dire need of medical care and can't seem to find it because we don't have
the money for me to go.

In this particular case, what's a person to do? Tomorrow, I'm looking into
using the system for the first time in my entire life. It's either that, or
I'll be dead in about 6 months to a year. I don't have any other options.

OB: I'm eating fresh green beans and fresh brussel sprouts for dinner
tonight! I'm happy! I love fresh veggies.

I've got to hustle up some ideas for veggies today myself. Let's see --
carrots and onions? Left-over greens. I've had some cranberry juice (TJ's)
and a banana so far. I have some apples and oranges, too. Need to look
further.

I've eaten carrots and onion more or less braised/fried for years, add a
little dill.

I love greens without fat-back (excuse the phrase) or any pork seasoning.
But I was raised with green beans and pork -- but now I prefer only green
beans steamed or in an Indian or Asian dish.

I'm just one of those people that don't like a meat/fat/butter seasoning
with veggies.
But I'll accept all the green beans you have.

Depending on coverage, a family plan can easily be $600 to $900 a month.

Many employers offer coverage, usually cheaper than what an individual can
do. As for cost, that is just part of the package. My employer pays for us,
but if I decided not to take it, I'd be paid more. You can't do comparisons
of coverage unless you look at the entire compensation package. Some trades
pay a hefty hourly rate, but offer no insurance, vacations, etc. Some
companies offer great benefits, but not so great wages.

We're absolutely strapped to the gills as is. I've got my fingers crossed
for some sort of good news from the Department of Health tomorrow.

All of what you say is true, and I know the figures. Regardless, there are
many people for whom even $300/month isn't affordable.

We just went through our annual "reallignment" of insurance coverage where
I work. Until this year, my employer payed the entire amount for me as an
individual, although I would have had to pay for spouse or dependent
children. This year employees now will pay about $25.00 per pay (bi-
weekly) for their own coverage, certainly a more than fair amount. Another
option is offered that my employer will pay completely, but the deductible
is outrageous.
