OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (June 7) - Police arrested a man in the abduction
and death of a teenager whose body was found Wednesday in a Missouri
park four days after she disappeared from a Kansas store's parking
    lot.

Do you think if they legalize prostitution ( I don't mean street/corner
prostitution) it will cut down on the number of rapes?

No. Rape is not about sex. First and foremost it's about forced power and
control over another person. Degradation and humiliation go right along
with it, hence the number of rapes that still go unreported.

    No.

Because rape is not all about sex.

    You know better than that.

That is definitely true but don't you think there are some cases where
just wanting to get some is the motivating factor?

IMO, it would not change the situation. Having sex with someone is
different than rape & murder, they are two different things. This man
did not want consensual sex with anyone, many rapists are married men.
This man wanted to dominate her, humilate her and have complete power
and control. Rape is an act of violence. This man did not want a willing
    participant.

What a terrible thing to happen to such a young girl. My thoughts are
    with her family.

No. Rape isn't about sex, it's about power, control, anger, and
    domination.

No, I don't think so, except in the case of date rape. In those situations
I'd say a lot of the time the guy expects to "get some" because he paid for
dinner or maybe sprang for the large buttered popcorn at the movies. And
    that is truly sad.

If someone just wants to "get some", legal or not, there are prostitutes all
over the place. So pay your $50 or $500 or whatever and get some. Leave
    that poor unwilling woman alone.

Legalizing prostitution was just a thought. I always believe in trying
to get to the root of the problem. It seems that nothing else is
working. Also in this case it looks like it was a matter of forced power
    and control.

No, probably not very much, but it will cut down on pimps exploiting
prostitutes. It will cut down on stupid prosecutions and
imprisonments that waste tax dollars. It will bring at least some of
the prostitutes' earnings onto the tax rolls.

Think about it, bro. Just wanting to "get some" fits the criteria.
How would you get it without overpowering a female in some way (mental
    or physical)?

Explain what you mean by mental and physical... if you eliminate the
mental and physical you ain't "getting any" ever. Charming (mental)
and handsome (physical) always works for me.

Resorting to any kind of forcing to "get some" has never been in my
litany of options... besides my good looks I have my silver tongued
wit, my greatest asset is humor, getting a woman to laugh is 90pct of
the way home for me... but most important right from the get-go is
showing the woman I'm trustworthy. I've always treated each encounter
like an important job interview, I'm always willing to wait for the
gal to do her FBI check... I don't need to "get any" on the first date
or even the first few dates... but I can always tell by the first date
whether getting any is in the cards. I don't "give any" on a first
date either, I gotta do my FBI check too... a woman who comes on too
strong on a first date is probably trouble.

No. Rape is not about sex. First and foremost it's about forced power and

with it, hence the number of rapes that still go unreported.

But "power" and "degradation and humiliation" can be sexual turn-ons.
Inappropriate sexual turn-ons, yes, but the whole crock-of-[censored] line,
"Rape is not about sex," is promoted to make rape victims feel better,
and hopefully lessen the rape's effect on the victim's sexuality.
However well meaning, it is still [censored].
I go so far as to say that any sexual intercourse that takes place in
a context of men being for more powerful than women is potentially
rape. That includes all sex that takes place in highly patriarchal
societies. In these societies, women have less power than the typical
12 year old girl in the West, and we think that guys who seduce 12
year old girls are horrible cads.

In parts of Africa they practice FGM*, which is meant to make
intercourse undesirable for women, thus transforming EVERY event into
rape. There, rape is the norm for sexual relations. Do you think
that when Nigerian men have sex with their mutilated wives, that it
"is not about sex"? You think that those guys aren't horny?

However much people don't like to admit it, rape is on the continuum
of normal human sexuality. That doesn't make it good, or even
acceptable. It is also "normal" to want to kill people who have upset
you, but we don't allow it, and for good reason. It is normal to want
to take your neighbors' food, dwelling, whatever too. We attempt to
socialize our children such that they do not do those things, by
instilling empathy and a sense of fairness. We don't always succeed.

Prostitution should be legal for ONE REASON, because our society,
which has, and continues to treat women as second class human beings,
has no moral authority to tell and individual woman what she may or
may not do with her own body. Telling women that they cannot use any
asset that they happen to have in consensual commerce continues that
patriarchal ownership paradigm. Those who think otherwise have a lot
in common with bin Laden and his folks.

In bonobo** societies there is no rape, and the females use their
sexual appeal to empower themselves, the nightmare scenario for all
the patriarchal religios, be they Taliban, or the guy in the Vatican.

*"The importance given to virginity and an intact hymen in these
societies is the reason why female circumcision still remains a very
widespread practice despite a growing tendency, especially in urban
Egypt, to do away with it as something outdated and harmful. Behind
circumcision lies the belief that, by removing parts of girls'
external genitals organs, sexual desire is minimized. This permits a
female who has reached the dangerous age of puberty and adolescence to
protect her virginity, and therefore her honor, with greater ease.
Chastity was imposed on male attendants in the female harem by
castration which turned them into inoffensive eunuchs. Similarly
female circumcision is meant to preserve the chastity of young girls
by reducing their desire for sexual intercourse."
