The police being unarmed leads me to believe it's Britain.

Last I heard that was a thing of the past and the police were now armed
because the criminals were still armed despite the absurd anti gun laws.
Just further proof that anti gun laws accomplish nothing but increasing
    the pool of victims.

I wasn't sure if they went armed yet. I don't really keep abreast of
that situtation but yes, I do read of many more violent crimes in
    Britain.

I also see they're becoming a surveillance society. That part scares the
    [censored] out of me.

So, would you rather be an armed society or a supervised society?

In Britain we have no regularly armed police. We do however have armed
units which can be called in when needed. We don't have enough though and
there is talk of having to have foreign armed police for the Olympics

There are more traffic cameras than anything else.

It's funny, a couple years back they ran a story in the local rag about
Nestor, Inc. and their traffic monitoring system. They wrote software
that could watch the flow of traffic and pass warnings along when it
    slowed down.

At the time I said they could nab speeders using that system. And sure
enough Nestor is now talking about doing just that.

    Here it's all about revenue.

So what else is new? ;-)

Searching, I don't see anything like that. But what I'm referring to
is that "the police are there to enforce the laws, and not to protect

    Dee Dee

I don't think you are going to find that in the constitution.
IIRC, that was a supreme court ruling.

I'd have to do some serious googling to find it but it's occasionally
discussed on the gun lists. I could ask someone there.

I'll refrain from crossposting to tx.guns, tempting as it is. <G>

Well, obviously, you've decided that arguments are pointless. Of
course there are places like that. The fact that there are criminals
does not mean you HAVE to be armed. Criminals are not all violent and
in Canada the appropriate level of violence does not include bodily
harm anyway, so guns are completely out of the question, at least as

It is a good idea when having roofing done to take photos of the roofers.
When your house gets burgled a few weeks later you can give the police the

Do they think people with recent roofing work are better
    burglary opportunities?

I suspect that it is some sort of feeling of entitlement or ownership. They
worked on the place and think it owes them something. While there are good
roofers out there, a lot of them are rather sleazy and the people they are
are often criminals who could be casing the place for a return visit.

One of my co-workers paid a quite a bit extra for a roofing jon to make
sure he would not have to worry about the wrong type of people working on
his house. He was upset when the guy he hired subcontracted the job to one
that he would not have hired. Three weeks after the roof was done there
    was a burglary.

    Closed minds do not hear.

I can remember living in fear for brief periods after prison breaks when
the escapees had been tracked near my farm. It is not a good way to
live-- armed or unarmed. I would do something about the society that
engenders such fear rather than declare everyone must go out only
accompanied and only armed. Children reared amid violence sometimes
choose it later on and I believe we should try harder to keep kids out
of violent homes, censor the amount of violence they see through the
media and have a look at why some of us think it's a life if it is lived
    with constant adrenalin of fear.

My world is not like that. It never was other than the briefest
periods. It isn't the way were were intended to live. Any society that
lives in and with such a terrible ethic is very sick.

Yeah, well I refuse to live in fear but I won't carry a gun and I
always have hot pepper sauce on hand.

Funny how it seems most of the anti-gun folks seem to live in constant
fear that the person in line with them at the grocery store might
have a gun... or the one at the hot dog stand... or the one at the
park... or the one at the coffee shop... It's a wonder they ever
    leave their little cocoons...

Not sure who you're talking about, Pete. I don't carry a gun, and I don't
live in fear. I figure if I've lived close to half a century without
packing a gun I've done pretty well for myself. Just don't get too close to
me when I've got a bottle of hot sauce or my trusty cast iron skillet! You
might just get hit with either one or both! 😉
