I've put a post on my blog about starvation mode training. If you're
into nutrition and training methods, please feel free to read this post,
make a contribution, submit links, whatever; I'd greatly appreciate
anything you've got.

Have a good night, I'm off to work.

Be sure you stay in the air con at work so you don't melt......
I don't really apply much science to my diet.....I just eat heaps and try to
make sure that most of it is not too bad for me. Having said this, about 5
or 6 weeks ago I changed my daily "work lunch" from a couple of banana
sandwiches to a bowl of wild rice with a tin of flavoured tuna (I cook up
enough rice for five tupperware containers each weekend and put them in the
fridge). I have also stopped my usual habit of eating until I feel full and
have actually made myself feel hungry for an hour or so before I eat during
the day (this is a challenge at time as I used to eat before I felt hungry).
My motivation for this is to lose a few kilograms so that I can climb on the
bike a bit better and have a better shot at some enduro events. This
appears to be working as I am now down from about 101kg to just over 95kg
and I am definately starting to lose some fat from around my midsection.
This is the lightest I have been since I was playing footy about 3 years ago
when 95kg was about my "fighting weight". I am planning on getting down to
around the 92kg mark (I haven't weighed 92kg since the end of a 2-month
sub-unit PTI course back in 97 where we did about 4 PT sessions a day and
had to run everywhere).
I need to work out a better strategy for fuelling during endurance events
though before I have a crack at some solo ones. At the Gravity 12hr, my
riding partner and I were lapping at around the 50 min mark and although I
had a whole stack of packet rice and pasta to cook up, I found that by the
time I cooled down, cleaned and lubed the bike, stretched, etc I didn't have
time to cook it up. I was eating bananas, oranges, muesli bars, snakes
pretty well all day but I think I needed something with more salt content as
I ended up with pretty bad cramps. One of the guys at work who has done a
few enduro type events suggested that potato chips are an easy way of
getting salt into the body and they are not too heavy in your gut (sounds
like it might be worth a try).
With your proposed "starvation mode", I would have thought that the body
would go into the "famine mode" and actually stop using up fat as an energy
source??? I lean more towards your theory of just making sure that you get
enough carbs in to the body during the race.
Ride On,
