Stem Help?

Hi, Guys-
I'm an Old Guy (think your grandfather, but in better shape), who rides a Trek 7700 FX every day- just 10.5 miles though, and on easy terrain. Moved up from a Trek suspension hybrid last year and I love the lighter weight and smoother operation. I've got the bike set up fairly well, except for the reach. I have a bad back and neck and I really need to get the bar/stem connection back almost an inch in order to straighten out my neck in my riding position. I could make up most of the difference by shooting the seat way forward, but that would throw my hip/leg/pedal relationship way off. The height is about right; I could tolerate higher, but not lower.
Thanks for any help.

You're certainly right about not fixing this by moving the seat forward. That's fixing one problem by causing a new one. How far forward are your bars from the steerer tube? You might be able to go to a shorter stem. You could also switch to some bars that are swept back more.
