tattoos??

I have five, and one of mine made the cover of Tattoo magazine (May 1994). I am thinking of adding the logo of the Lance Armstrong foundation on the side of my lower left leg.

Jeez, why not just approach Walmart, Pepsi, and Burger King about selling them some ad space? If they demand full time visibility, just put it on your forehead!

I've got a "shake your bones" Dead tribute on the right side of my chest (ca. 1994) and an 8" dia. stylized Japanese Dragon coiled near the center of my back (Aug. 2003). The dragon's still to be filled, will post photos soon.

I don't have a tattoo but...5 kids later my belly sort of resembles a topographic map--sorry for the visual on that🙂-- so I've actually been humorously toying with the idea of a tattoo that would incorporate the stretch marks and dress them up a bit. Don't know that I'll ever go for it but it amuses me to think about it.

I've got a self-designed tat on my left shoulder - kanji for "Divine Wind" (kami kaze, a bit of a double-entendre 😉 in a tribal design, over a tribal arm band.

A few years back I had my right nipple pierced as an anniversary present for my then girlfriend, who dug it as much as I did. Got tired of it after a year or two tho, and removed it.

I've got one from some road rash that I couldn't get all of the grit out of. Does that count?

Yikes- some harsh words about the community of tatooed people here. I have a lot of tatoos, and will continue getting them. I have to admit, I hate them as well...at least every time I see some retarded schmuck with a shoe brand on his body forever, but who am I to say what is "acceptable" and what is not.

For me, tatooing is a compulsion that has been life long. I grabbed an HA's arm at the Grand theatre in Oakland when I was about five...and it was all over. Mom smacked the [censored] out of me, but I was hooked. Even had dad believing that was what I was going to do after college- and he surprisingly supported it. Of course, he wept tears of joy when the Biology degree and teaching credential (I would make at least 3x my salary tatooing) came along, but he never wained in his support of the other.
Now, there are some of you that cannot understand the compulsion aspect here, but I can equate it to similar feelings I get on the bike. Riding (and getting tatooed) for me is an expression of ownership- I own my body, and my space, and I can do whatever the hell I want in it...It is freedom to me, of the kind I rarely get in my 9-5, paycheck to paycheck life. The tatoo is real...and although it sounds like a lot of hippy [censored]...it is something I need to do to "sit right" with my self. It is the ultimate commitment to self and self expression, and of course it doesn't make sense to those who don't have them...that is precisely why they don't have them!
Anyway- people with tatooes do not care if you DON'T have them, and yes, it is like a membership in some secret club, so those of you that would desparage those of us who modify our form, your comments are falling on deaf ears.
Yes, I hate tatooes, for the simple reason that anybody can go get a terrible one of Yosemite Sam on their bodies, but I guess there is a lot to be said for those of us who have the courage to wear a stupid mistake forever (I have one uncle with his own name in a heart,a and another with 4 womens names crossed out on his fore-arms), but I really hate living in a place where we have all sorts of supposed freedoms, and yet if we are tatooed the extensions of that freedom are limited. I hate having to hide mine for fear that some parent at the school I work in will make a fuss about it...but such is life.
Anyway- yeah, I have tatoos and I plan to get more...sure, maybe I'll get sleeves and quit my damn job, pick up a rig and start putting nike signs on frat boys for three times the money... the piercings are another story entirely, had to take those out to even get into grad school, f#*@ing hypocrits.
As for Hep- [censored], my tattoist's office is so much cleaner then my doctors office I ain't going to worry about it

I got my tatt done at a place called Tattoo Magic in Fitzroy. They did a god job.

I like tattoos, these days I don' t think they mean anything in particular about what kind of person you are, and I think it's weird that some people hate them so much when they like (for example) shaving, makeup, pierced ears (but not lips!) etc. I'll most likely never get one because a) I'm cheap, b) can't think of something that defines the true essence of me in picture form, and c) i'm a wimp about needles.

But while I have all you tat enthusiasts here, I have a couple of questions.
First, what is with these chicks who tattoo their own name across their lower back? I can only assume that they believe this is the most likely place someone will be looking when they forget the girl's name.

Second, what does "tribal" mean? Native American/First Nation? Polynesian? African? All purpose primitive?

Third, I'm not saying this applies to any of you, but if it does, please explain... I don't understand commandeering someone else's culture for your personal beautification. Like people going to a tat shop and picking chinese characters at random off a chart. Wouldn't it sort of be like a non-biker getting a chainring tattoo to look like a real one? I guess I'm all about truth in advertising. Maybe that's why I don't get one; I don't know who I'll be from one minute to the next.

You got it all correct. I do think Indonesian tribals are quite nice. :o

I have a tattoo of Asian origin and I am not Asian. I am however living (and have lived in many parts) in Asia and feel that it is a part of me. I studied Buddhism and learned sanskrit and my tattoo is sanskrit. My tattoo is also not in a place that most people can see (very few as a matter of fact) as it is on my sternum. I dont advertise, I did this for myself.

It is often that a person asks for a Kanji (chinese character) off a chart and has no idea what it means...there are many stories that any Japanese will tell you...like...

One man asked for the word `courage` from his Japanese friend. Well, the friend thought he asked for `college` (since there is no `L` in Japanese they are confused quite often when talking with a native speaker) and he ended up with that silliness tattooed on his arm.

Another time a man walked into the shop, chose a Kanji because it looked cool and had `ramen` tattooed on him. Ramen are Chinese noodles. Idiot. :eek:

OK, tribal to me is anything abstract that appears to be geomteric in form. In general it can be what you have summised.

Commandeering another cultrue is fine with me. I enjoy foods from all over the world and for religious purposed, I take what I want from each of them and mould them into something that suits me. That being said, I am not one for having words from a non roman text based language tattooed on me either.

I think tattoos are great as long as they're not offensive to others and that it has meaning to the person wearing it. I only have one, on my shoulder, which is an Eagle, Globe, and Anchor and the letters USMC under it. I enjoyed my 7 years in the Marines and am proud to be able to wear the EGA. 🙂

No tattoos or peircings here. I prefer a bronze tan with sun bleached blonde hair (helps hide the gray ones! 🙄 ).
