I suppose it is no surprise that I never remarked on anyone's curiosity
about where anyone lived. The only times I have noticed it coming up is
where people discuss the availability of products. I am not ashamed of
where I live. It is a physically scenic enough area with lots of streams and
forests, lots of farms. There are a number of small, family run orchards and
vegetable gardens so during the late spring and summer I can get farm fresh
berries, cherries, asparagus, even black currants. I can pick up organic
eggs and chickens from the neighbours. There is even a trout farm nearby. I
sometimes wish I were closer to the ocean so that I could get a nice variety
    of fresh seafood.

Oh gawd, I shoulda known you would say something like that - left myself
wide open for that one... heh heh heh heh. But someone posted a recipe
for mole sauce and I am quite keen to try it. Looks like a bit of work,
but sometimes its worth it. We "cheat" by buying the ready-made peanut
sauce mix - just add coconut milk... We do make our own from scratch
too, but when one is in a hurry, the ready made stuff can be good too.
The stuff we get is made by Conimex, which is made in Holland.

When you have a week, it will make a nice project. :-)

Years ago I tackled a mole sauce quite similar to that, and about the same
complexity. Lots of ingredients, lots of times, lots of bowls, and quite a
    mess. It was quite good!

Heh. It got my curiosity going.... and we had decided on chicken
tonight, but not what to do with it.... so....I found a rec for Chicken
Mole.... DH is running the blender as we speak! 😉 Had to raid the
MIL's cupboards for one or two of the ingredients, but I am looking
forward to trying it! Here's the rec, if you are interested - it's very
simple compared to modom's - I must admit.... and nowhere near as hot -
but its Saturday and we have the time.. This rec brags about having the
cooking time down to 20 minutes but the prep/ingredient round up took
a tad longer than that! Oh, and we didn't have brown rice - so we are
going with good old steamed basmati rice.....

    Chicken Mole

Done the traditional way, this Mexican dish can take an entire day to
prepare, but here we've trimmed the cooking time down to just 20

    1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon
    1/4 teaspoon Anise seed
    1 cup Low-sodium tomato sauce
    1 teaspoon Dark brown sugar
    2 tablespoons Sesame Seeds
    1/2 cup Slivered almonds
    2 teaspoons Seedless raisins

    3. Coat a microwave-safe bowl with nonstick cooking spray and add onion
and garlic. Cover with plastic wrap and microwave and high for 3
minutes or until onions are soft. Puree onions and remaining
ingredients (except bittersweet chocolate and cocoa powder) in a
blender to a thick paste, then pour into same frying pan. Heat on
low-medium and add cocoa powder and bittersweet chocolate. Simmer,
stirring constantly, for 5 minutes. Add chicken and stir, simmering 5
    more minutes.
    4. To serve, divide rice evenly among 4 dinner plates and top with
equal amounts of chicken mole. Garnish with sesame seeds if desired.

LOL it's true. He lives at the other side of the Pennines from me🙂

    Just looked it up:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennines
    Absolutely gorgeous countryside.
    Dee Dee

  17. Well, I'm the one who started the privacy thing. The context was not
    actually about specific ingredients, it was because she (my assumption;
could be wrong, don't DARE ask gender!!) was posting these delicious
sounding menus but they sounded very light and summery to me. I was
thinking from the way she wrote and the types of foods described that
she was here in the U.S., as many of us are, but then her menus led me
to believe that perhaps she was in a hemisphere that's living
summertime right now. So I asked. When she declined to answer, I said
okay, no big deal. Seems like that coulda been the end of it. But no,
this is Usenet, things always have to go too far.

And I still think it's appropriate to ask continent/hemisphere, even
when someone doesn't want to give a city, state, country, or anythig
too specific. It helps me to garner a good mental picture. Are they
sitting down to eat tuna in cucumber cups in a 20 degree blizzard? Much
different that eating it outside on the deck when it's 80 degrees with
a nice breeze. Location helps to create a complete picture, that's all.

As an example.......please, nobody take offense at being named! It
would be a little odd to think of Barb Schaller living in, say,
Ecuador, because she's been posting about heartier winteery foods that
wouldn't match up so well around the equator.Or Pandora. It would be
difficult to picture her living in Fargo, North Dakota, based on the
recipes she posts and the ingredients she uses. Am I making any sense?

I thoroughly agree with you; but one cliche admonition. You can't tell a
    book by its cover.
I recall someone in another group saying that I, Dee, would like something
fixed a little differently (perhaps sweeter or softer, I can't recall)
    because of where I lived.
Was it kimchee!!! TEE HEE! No -- never mind.

for me. Too many are hung up on where I live to notice the food
discussion. It's time I moved on. I've found a couple of nice groups
where location doesn't seem to be an issue so I think I'll hang out
there. I hope everyone enjoys their cooking experience whatever it is.
    God speed 🙂

Does anyone else here feel like they've just been dismissed by royalty? I
had to go back and re-read some of its posts...they stopped just short of
    using the royal "we".

More like being dismissed by a 'paranoid', i don't understand 'its'
objection to people asking about general area, no one was asking for a
street address, i used to whine about living in a boring area with
nothing to do here until it was pointed out to me that many people
consider San Francisco Ca. to be a enviable place to live, familiarity
    breeds contempt and all that.

The original inquiry about 'its' area was about regional foods and their
availability, no point in telling some one about foie gras or truffles
or fine wines if the person is living in the back woods of some rural
area and don't have access to any of the above.

And its reaction seemed to me overly sensitive, which could be for a
good reason, maybe its been 'stalked' or had an abusive relationship it
is trying to avoid, but then a simple explanation rather than an
condemnatory accusation of inquisitiveness would have sufficed.
