FORGET four wheels, two are proving the transport of choice for those looking to escape record high fuel prices.

New motorcycle registrations numbered 21,180 last financial year, up from 19,990 in 2003-04, VicRoads figures show. Bicycle Victoria data released this week shows a five-fold increase in the number of cyclists in the city since 1992, up from an average of 92 to 461 an hour in Swanston Street.

And the punt operating between Spotswood and Fishermans Bend will begin a seven-day service at peak times from next month to meet a growing demand from cyclists.
