Does anyone have strange thoughts while running? Personally I like to
think of pardoxes or the unknown but sometimes I will make up my own
little plots. My g/f said she think about "wierd" things for
instance: "why is the sky blue", If you look into a mirror what if
that is another world, are two if someone is really interested I could
    get the rest

For me during training it doesn't really matter what I think but I
noticed in races that as soon as I consciously try to distract myself
from the discomfort of the extra effort by thinking about nice things
like sex (for example), it works too well and I slow down. The last
two races I have really concentrated on the race and what I'm trying
to do and have set a PB both times. This is not to suggest that the
only point of races is to set PBs - that's unrealistic.

Often things come up that I need to do later, so I leave a memo on my
cellphone or call my answering machine at home. Problem solving happens
also if there's some big project I'm working on. The best runs seem to be
when the mind zones out and you finish the run and wonder where the time
    went.

But today I was just thinking how much I didn't want to be out there
running, doing intervals with my feet hurting -- going through a really
bad spell for the last few weeks!

I felt that way today, damn I hate heat and humidity. How about substituting
some bike workouts to save your feet?
I read an article recently about a study in which they had some runners do
hard workouts on a bike instead of running two days a week. The bottom line
was they performed as well as the group that did hard running workouts. It
was in an issue of Runner's World in my chiropractor's office, not sure what
month. It's supposed to hit 90 with high humidity tommorow, road bike here I
    come!

I hope to make it down to the finish at the Escarpment run. I think my wife
threw away my application, she's afraid of me suffering a disabling injury.

Yup, I plan to do that for the next 10 days or so, before I get into the
taper, though I hadn't run hard in 2 weeks almost so I wanted to put some
work in... sad. In the future I plan to go back to more of a balance of
running and biking. Health and life in balance, I think I could handle what
was my peak this year (50-60 mpw) on an ongoing basis, but not otherwise, as
has been the case most of this year.

Haha! It's not *that* bad - as Mt. marathon for example. I hope to see you
there. At this point I don't expect to improve on last year (and may in fact
slip backwards in the placings) since my training hasn't been up to par for
the last month -- but I plan to run it and enjoy it. I figure if things go
well the first 1/3 or so and I feel good, it's worth pushing it all the way.
Otherwise I might just relax and try to enjoy it more.

  4. My emotions are amplified - both negative
and positive. Seems strange when returning
to a non-running state. Its almost like
remembering a dream - seems less real
    afterwards.
