  1. Here is a link to the transcript of the BBC interview with
Kofi Annan, wherein he is usually referred to as having
said, "The genocide of a generation".

If it is there, I can't find it.

Here is the BBC presentation that followed from that
interview, 6 days later. It clearly refers to K.A. having
said, "the genocide..". After this, there were various other
references to that phrase, in news articles around the
world, - they are still there on the web. Most of them seem
to reference to this link, below, as their cited source. One
or two refer to the interview itself, at the link above.

Has anyone heard Kofi Annan use the word "genocide" to refer
to the calls by Hamas, Hizbolla, et al to exterminate all
Jews via suicide bombings of schools and buses?

The Iraq food for oil program, overseen by his son, is a
    perfect example of his character.

Once again, discussion of any more in-depth or serious
health topic, such as might cause people to actually think a
little more outside of their concrete boxes, has been
    successfully stifled.

And so, I guess, it always will be.

Hey, have a happy complacent, secure little life, why don't
you, where nothing challenges your complacency and where
no-one is required to think or to actually debate anything
at all beyond the inane neuroses of machine-like
    repetitious trash.

Maybe. The BBC had run a two week presentation for last
year's World AIDS day. The interview was only the
    beginning of that.

And so, I guess, it always will be.

My point was that Kofi Annan does not determine the
    definition of genocide

    Oh, alright.

In that case, I may say that I _do_ believe that what is
happening in Sub-Saharan countries irt HIV/AIDS is genocide.

I was content to accept the limits of usage of the term
according to how the Secretary General of the UN used the
term. However as you say you would not accept such limits,
then you have removed the reason for me to do so either.

(Sorry to David, but Ilsa has just removed that boundary
line of usage which I would otherwise have accepted.)

Oh, so now I, Ilsa, get to determine the definition of
    genocide?

This is what I am saying:

Insofar as genocide is the intentional removal or
eradication of people according to their ethnicity or race,
the allowance of HIV/AIDS to proliferate in Sub-Saharan
Africa fits that description. Who the originators may have
been, I don't know, but all of us in the nations of the
obese are a party to it, at least by way of our indifference
    to what is happening.

<Sigh> How 'bout this? Can we agree that the HIV Epidemic,
especially as manifest in Africa, is a humanitarian crisis
that deserves far greater attention & aid from all
    countries that can afford it?

    Ten years ago, yes.

Today, in those countries where every third person has HIV,
    or every third

timebomb irt others, it is no longer adequate.

Can you imagine, just for a moment, what that would be
like? To walk down to the store and know that every third
person you meet or pass on the street is so affected? And
that there are no drugs available for them, there, to
treat the disease. And little education as to what

If anthrax or something more deadly were released via
unknown origins into the city of Sydney in Australia and it
took out most of the population in the city within the year,
    - 2,000,000 + dead, - would you describe that simply as, "An
humanitarian crisis which needs more attention"? Because
that is the number of people who died from AIDS in Africa in
2001. Just in that one year alone.

People in some of the well-fed nations as you call them
aren't getting the health care they need (look at the USA)
so can't afford to ship endless billions in aid to other
Nations. We have old people here in America who can't afford
their prescription meds, and poor families who don't have
enough to eat. We have people who need transplants and can't
get them. The premiums for health insurance is killing many

AIDS among the poor, the minorities, the drug addicts and
even the middle class when they max-out their insurance, to

I would like to know what Toby is personally doing to stop
    the "genocide".

HIV is a horrible disease that gets spread due to improper
behavior for the most part. Stop the sharing of needles and
    promiscuous

is largely due to certain behavior the only way to stop it
is to have the people stop the dangerous behavior. Not sure
    how you can do that.

The other option is to find a vaccine or cure.

In practical terms, what is needed most urgently is access
to HIV meds, access to condoms, and rapid education of the
basics as to how and why the disease spreads, - education of
ordinary people. And, access to clean water, so that people
can at least drink and wash in water that is uncontaminated.

Once there is sufficient will and intention to bring about
radical change in some area, then that can be sometimes be
done quite rapidly. That is all it may require, - sufficient
    will and intention.

I don't believe that the problem is silence. I believe the
problem is that there is no easy solution.

In regard to specific, localised groups, the opposite is
true. Because people there survive on so little, and have
so little - of anything (education, medicines, hygiene,
clean water, warm blankets), - because of that, even the
smallest actions that individuals from the wealthy nations
could take, can bring about a greater change than could
result from similar actions in other countries. Minimal
active interest or concern on the part of any of us, can
have the potential to change the course of life for others
    over there.

At a national level, Brazil has apparently had success with
turning the tide of the epidemic and providing affordable
meds for those who need it. And they have also achieved that
in a largely Catholic population. - in conjunction with
concerned members of the RC church. But I have not
researched it, so I don't know much about it.

And you've been asked how anyone could possibly stop AIDS
from spreading in Africa. How does the rest of the world
    stop these unfortunate people

"Those unfortunate people" are our brother and sister
    human beings.

They do need access to condoms, they do need education as to
safe practices, and they do sometimes need an antidote to
wrong or harmful church teachings which say that they should
not even mention the word "condoms".

I've heard that happens in the US, the UK, through Europe
    and Australasia,

Please stop trying to suggest that they are somehow
inherently more promiscuous in comparison to, say, the US,
because I believe that is not the case for the ordinary
young people. Again, they live with daily problems such as
hunger, malnutrition, extreme poverty, and other diseases
    such as malaria.

Yes, they do need education about many things, and in
    particular about safe health practices.

    Quoted message said:

How do we force them not to be unfaithful on their mates?
How do we force them to wear condoms?

When it was explained to them and the condoms were there,
they understood immediately and would use them if available.
People adjust their behaviour according to what they know
and learn. And there are many who _are_ totally monogamous
and are faithful to their spouse all their life (and
obviously more of those are the ones who remain uninfected
today), but who is going to protect their children, and the
many orphans of siblings that each family now carries?
Without education, without access to basic safe health
measures, the future looks impossibly bleak for some of
those people. (And yet, strangely perhaps, they are often a
very cheerful people, who love music and singing and dance,
and who are enthusiastic about life, and appreciative of
many small things - from those of whom I have learned over
    the last couple of years.)

How do we get the condoms to them, and who pays for the
billions of condoms they'll need now and in the future?

At a governmental level, when it was thought that dangerous
biological agents were lurking elsewhere, such as could
cause widespread disease and devastation, cost was not an
issue. Forces were mobilised; the problem was addressed. (3-
4 billion US per month, currently). Same attitude should
apply here, where a deadly biological agent is destroying
    several countries very rapidly.

Why don't YOU come up with some answer for these problems?

The beginning of an answer would be in people in wealthier
nations no longer screening it out from their consciousness.

How about the African Nations themselves doing something
    about the problem?

In those countries where one in three (in at least one
country it is now 40% - almost every second adult other than
the very old) has HIV in some form, and where they have also
been through famines and other challenges, - in some of
those places they can't do it on their own. Where entire
families are gone, leaving children only, - if the problem
is going to be addressed there has to be help from outside,
from those nations and people who are able to help.

    some volunteer work Toby??

Are you aware that condoms are made available to many in

millions of dollars that the United States has given to
Africa to help with the AIDS problem??

Maybe, maybe not. Don't assume that people will act in their

Money is not necessarily going to solve this problem. There
