  1. I was wondering if you know of people that lost a good amount of
weight with Atkins, then transitioned into a more "normal" healthy
diet, and kept the weight off,or even kept losing.
Ive lost about 20 lbs in 2 months of Atkins, and it hasnt been
hard, except giving up carbs in the beginning. I havent even been
    exercising much.
Im planning on sticking on it, going back to Induction level, limited
calories, for about 2 weeks to shed another 5+ lbs.
After that,my plan is to start transitioning into a healthy, low
calorie diet. One good thing with Atkins is ive learned about the
damage that can be caused by carbs, and ill be controlling my intake
from now on. But id like to cut back on the saturated fat,get some
fruits and whole grains/legumes into my diet, maybe a glass of skim
    milk here and there.
    The reasons are
    - my family has a tendency towards high cholesterol and heart disease.
-all of this fat and protien, with little carbs makes me feel
sluggish, which is part of the reason im not exercising much.
-in the past, ive been very successful with a lowfat diet +
    exercise,and i want to start losing 5 lbs/week. Its important that i
lose 60 lbs by Sept, plus gain muscle, so exercise has to be a big
    part of it.

Im planning on not going ridiculously lowfat, but eating less saturated
fat, getting some fruits/whole grains/lean dairy and keeping my caloric
intake low, controlling carbs with lean meats. The carbs i get should
help me alot in working out intensely which I need to do.

Overall, I do reccomend Atkins diet, it takes off the weight much
easier than other diets. I dont think I was ever hungry although i
    craved carbs at times.

  2. Did you bother to read the book?

Duh! Try reading up on OWL or maintenance. There's absolutely nothing
unhealthy about a properly-balanced Atkins diet, and if you go back to
eating "normal" levels of carbs, serves you right.

yes,i skimmed through it a couple months ago. The main thing is i plan
on eating over 60 g carbs per day eventually. Still not a "normal"
carb intake, but more than Atkins maintenance.Plus i will be limiting
fats, so it really wont be the Atkins diet anymore.

Read the book on OWL. Atkins addresses ongoing
life changes required to maintain a healthy diet and
lifestyle. Exercise is very much a part of the Atkins
diet. I find that when my energy levels dip it is because
I have not been keeping up my exercise regiment.

    Huh?

Where in Atkins does it say that maintenance is under 60g of carbs a
day? One of the main points of Dr A's plan was to discover what level
of carbs each person can maintain his or her weight on (or to lose
weight, in OWL). The *only* time a carb level is given is for
Induction, the first 2 weeks (ONLY the first 2 weeks) which is 20g per
day. After 2 weeks, you find your own level by experimentation.

Atkins has no problem with someone limiting fats, either, if it works
for them. He just says that many people don't *need* to limit fats.

I dropped sixty plus pounds a couple of years ago by heavily reducing
carbs, watching calories, and exercising daily. I didn't go as low as
Atkins followers believe is necessary, but I still lost the weight very
easily. I now eat "normal" carb levels, i.e., 150 grams per day give or
take ten or so, no junk carbs though, and have increased calories to
2500 - 3000. I am not putting any fat on (over the last eighteens
months) and am very slowly increasing muscle.

Yes you can lose weight and then eat normally, but I truly doubt that it
can be done without exercise. I introduced a number of pleasurable
pastimes that involve exercise, so it isn't very difficult to keep it up.

The only real advantage in ketosis (for some people) is that the ketosis
suppresses appetite. So does exercise, something that seems to be quite
    contrary to many people's belief.

Atkins, when done right, is a more "normal" healthy diet and is designed to
    help anyone keep weight off.

:: Ive lost about 20 lbs in 2 months of Atkins, and it hasnt been

That's a problem. You should be execising if you are able.

Why do you feel you need to go back to induction? Why not follow Atkins and
    increase carbs and do exercise?

See, you're not really following the plan.

Atkins doesn't demand that you eat sat fats, that's your poor execution of
the plan that has resulted in that. Plus, sat fat isn't harmful when you're
not eating in excess and when you're limiting carb intake.

    get some
:: fruits and whole grains/legumes into my diet, maybe a glass of skim
    :: milk here and there.

whole grains/legumes are necessarily health, and neither is skim milk for
    that matter.

    :: The reasons are
:: - my family has a tendency towards high cholesterol and heart
    :: disease.

Then Atkins will help you. Furthermore, high cholesterol has been shown to
not be a good indicator for
heart disease. You really need to start reading up, because you're making
very poor decisions by proceeding as you are.

:: -all of this fat and protien, with little carbs makes me feel
:: sluggish, which is part of the reason im not exercising much.

Fat and protein aren't making you feel sluggish. You're very likely keeping
carb levels too low and you're not exercising, so you're body hasn't adapted
    to burning fat more efficiently.

:: -in the past, ive been very successful with a lowfat diet +
    :: exercise,and i want to start losing 5 lbs/week.

Do you weigh 400 + lbs? Losing 5 lbs / week is crazy, unless you weigh
    about 400+ lbs.

    Its important that i
:: lose 60 lbs by Sept, plus gain muscle, so exercise has to be a big

Well, you're doing it all wrong. There is no way you'll lose 5 lbs / week
and gain any muscle at all.

Funny how you can abandon what works based on misguided notions and lack of
    study.

Fat is not the problem. Eating too much is. Carbs tend to make a lot of
    people eat too much.

Aktins doesn't claim that you can eat unlimited anything. You don't overeat
on Atkins. 60 g of carbs isn't some magical Atkins maintenance level. If you
had bothered to read the book, you'd know that Atkins is a process whereby
you can find your optimal carb level based on the activity in your
lifestyle. For all you know, your optimal level could be 100 g / day, but
you'll never know with your sloppy approach.

I'm not sure why you think that Atkins won't allow 150 g / day of carbs.
The maintenance phase could very easily allow that for very active people.

150 g of carbs a day. Consider what is "normal" today.

Exercise is good, but it doesn't always suppress appetite. It can stimulate
    appetite as well.
Moderate levels of exercise can help control appetite, and that works on
    Atkins too.

  13. It's called maintenance and Atkins has a whole book on it.

  15. I petty much had the same reaction and advice as you Roger. From what
Phoenix posted, it's clear that not much was gotten from skimming the
book. Perhaps most amazing is the statement that he's had good results
from doing low fat and Atkins. So, why is he still fat and trying to
now transition to another diet? That is likely the essence of the
problem, looking at this as just a short term thing, to then go back to
    the old ways.

As to the rest, going back to induction? If he's lost 20lbs in 2
months, why go back instead of continuing forward? Wants to add fruit?
Of course you can do that on Atkins, strawberries and cantelope can
certainly be added close to maintenance. Add skim milk? Ditto, just
    buy the Hood LC milk.

As for saturated fat, as you pointed out Roger, you can certainly
control that on Atkins by eating fish, chicken, turkey, cooking with
olive oil, etc. Plus if he's worried about cholesterol, did he even
have any blood work done to know the results from LC before assuming
it's bad. As many of us have seen, total cholesterol usually either
goes down or stays the same, with HDL going up and trig going way down
    on Atkins.

In short, he needs to read the book and keep doing what is obviously
    working.

  16. You'd have to lose 2.8 pounds/week to lose 60 by the first week in
September. I think 1-2 pounds is a reasonable goal if your metabolism
    is healthy.
I know of some that have switched to weight watchers from atkins and
lost weight. But they didn't have a major problem with carbs like I
do. If you have successfully lost 20 pounds so far on your "Atkins"
why stop? Just up the carbs for the days you exercise. I am able to
do this and still stay in ketosis.
Have you gotten your blood chemistry's done? You could have a thyroid
problem that could account for your sluggishness? Or candida could be
a problem. Are you drinking enough water? It wouldn't hurt to read
Atkins in its entirety. Two years ago I started Induction (stayed in
it for 2 months) had blood work done after 30 days and my total
cholesterol dropped 65 points!!! No "diet" ever performed as well in
    the heart department.

When you finally start following the Atkins diet instead of the
"Phoenix, I skimmed the book and don't know my ass from a hole in the
ground diet" then maybe we could assist you in transitioning to
"normal" maintenance per the Atkins diet AS WRITTEN.

Atkins is normal, as long as you don't think Atkins is mostly composed
of eating a bunch of bacon-wrapped steaks slathered with butter. I find
that eating meat (including lots of chicken and fish), vegetables,
dairy, and nuts (and, ok, cocktails) and forgoing all foods that come
    in boxes is quite normal.

And I just learned that my cholesterol levels are really good after 2
years of eating this way: LDL 102, HDL 84. Have you spoken with your
doctor about your cholesterol and your family history? Does s/he
approve of your low-carb eating? I'm lucky to have a doctor that does,
and it was easy to gauge her attitude toward it when I presented it as
"I eat no sugar or potatoes, and almost no grains," rather than as "I
    do Atkins."

If you've truly "given up" carbs, then you're not even loosely
following Atkins. Please don't promulgate the myth that Atkins is
"no-carb." It's imprecision like that that makes people think it's

It's great that you've lost 20 pounds and that you've found it easy.
Are you taking vitamins, like Atkins recommends? That'll help you have

It's not realistic to lose that amount that quickly and to keep it off
and do no damage to your body. You're setting yourself up for failure
by not setting a more realistic goal.

Good luck. Please read the book.

Absolutely. These days, it's better not to say "Atkins". Don't even say
"low carb" just talkabout what you eat. And, having outstanding lipids to
    back you up is compelling.

yes,i skimmed through it a couple months ago. The main thing is i plan
on eating over 60 g carbs per day eventually. Still not a "normal"
carb intake, but more than Atkins maintenance.Plus i will be limiting
fats, so it really wont be the Atkins diet anymore.
