Isn't there? "unenclosed high fells" in the YD's there's plenty and cover a larger area than the LD.

No problem wild camping as long as you don't camp on a farmers doorstep without permission. IMHO.

GOML ? A few in the dales are, but most are very friendly in my experience.

Oops, Mistake ;-)

Yorkshire Dales NP: 1,773 sq km

Lake District NP: 2,292 sq km

Although the population in the Yorks. Dales NP is half that of the LDNP!

It seems bigger and lonelier than the LD to me though! When backpacking the desolate fell though;-)

I think it is possible to camp on the southern side of Ingleborough Hill near Gaping Ghyll. If you
contact the Ingleborough estate at Clapham they will let you know.

The vast majority of them have no problem with walkers

Another place where I have camped which is very wild is at Tan Hill, on the N Yorkshire Durham
border. It has the advantage that there is a pub nearby that you can retreat to if the snow gets
above 20ft deep.

I'd second this - most of the area North from Hawes, via Great Shunner Fell and Swaledale up to Tan
Hill is fantastic and usually pretty deserted.
