I think the rule of thumb is to eat 10-12 times your current body
    weight
if you want to lose weight and down to 8 if THAT doesn't work. For
myself, I need to eat between 1200-1400/day in order to lose weight,
    and
even then it takes some time. I am also more inactive than average.

    Saffire,

You look great!! Wow, totally different. A question, though---do you
    have
more than one size of the same outfit? I cannot believe how different
    your
side profile is. You don't look like you weigh 137---more like 125.

Wow, thanks for the GREAT compliments! No, I don't have the same outfit
in different sizes (you're not the first person to ask that :-) I'm
handy with a sewing machine and I just keep taking them in, although I
REALLY have to buy some new pants soon because after a certain point,
taking in the bigger ones just doesn't work anymore because they pooch
out oddly where the thighs meet the torso :-) I've been putting it off
for a long time because I REALLY want to get to 125 (or at least less
than 130) before I do that; otherwise I'll just have to take the NEW
ones in. Maybe for my "goal" shots I'll wear something different so
people won't think I'm just PhotoShopping the same photo to make it LOOK
smaller (I AM PhotoShopping it, but that's for cosmetic changes
(literally -- I add extra eyelashes, for instance), not fat manipulation
    :-)

I would *never* guess you to weigh 137. You must have some dense bones or
lots of muscle🙂 LOL on the photoshop.

  2. ACK~ What level? I *love* math. My son does also---he is majoring in
engineering. He has one year left. My 18 yr old is absolutely stupid in
math. She thinks it's funny. I want to smack her when she asks dumb
questions like, "what is 81 minus 71?" I don't find it funny at all---pure
stupidity. My 20 yr old is majoring in architecture. She is extremely smart
in the math area. Do you grade on a curve?

But would the food stamps be worth more than his additional raise in

yup it would.. we need to get taxes fixed we have too much taken out and
stop with the 401k and also convince the student loan people we are too
    poor

How would you convince the the bank who loaned you/or your husband the money
for school, to not garnish his checks? There are ways to pay back student
loans without having your checks garnished. You can pay interest only for X
amount of years..etc. You *have* to pay back student loans. I don't get it.

You didn't see partial differential equations in high school.

    Please explain what those are?

Pieces of derivatives stuck together in the same equation?

The best examples are second order physics equations like Laplace's equation

Teaching is not notorious for high pay which is why there are so few
good ones. I'd love to teach Junior High.

After 18 years, I only bring in $1,400 per paycheck after taxes every 2
weeks. I don't recommend Medical Technology as a degree.

For a BS, the starting pay sux.

El Paso? You have my condolences! Last time I drove thru there, the air

It WOULD be nice to have 3 months off in the summer!
But, that kind of pay nowadays is just not attracting very many people

I work down in the valley where all the smog is, but I live higher up in the

There's a huge difference in air quality. El Paso doesn't look like much

Supply and demand. There are plenty of people who will
do it for less money, therefore schools get away with
    paying teachers under $100K.

I do NOT think teacher quality has fallen over the years.
More and more have better and better college educations.
I think the source of the problem is what the curiculum
has become. I was amazed at what was and wasn't in the
curiculum when my daughters went through school compared
to when I went through school.

Schools also churn out far more of them than their are
jobs. That drives the price down. My younger daughter
went through that program after high school. What a
difference if she'd started towards LVN instead.

I certainly wouldn't be complaining that it was
fortified oatmeal, or whatever "Purina People Chow" would translate as.
I'd figure that was, by definition, the most economical and widely
available sustenance the government could provide

Purina has an active research program to determine the
actual nutritional requirements of each type of animal
they supply chow for. Animals like dogs they have a
chance to conduct life-span studies so they can even
get to ideal portions on a per-nutrient basis. Animals
like monkeys live too long to be able to do that so
they are formulated based on educated guesses that use
    what data is available.

The chows are a compromise - 1) Deliver all of the
needed micro-nutrients in as close to the ideal mixture
as possible. 2) Deliver a mixture of macro-nutrients
that delivers the longest healthy lifespan for the least
    money.

The stuff may smell nasty, but it's healthy per dollar.
The premium pet food companies do the same system
without minimizing dollars - all micro-nuts, best
macro-nuts for longest healthy lifespan. My brother is
a veterinarian and he stocks Nutro Max for sale to his
customers, but all the years he was in school our dogs
    got basic Purina.

So what would Purina People Chow actually be? It would
have lots of vitamins and minerals. Plenty of protein.
Enough fat. Fill with cheap carbs. It would smell nasty.
What would Nuto Max for Humans actually be? It would
have lots of vitamins and minerals. Plenty of protein.
Enough fat in the correct mixture to include the various
omegas. Fill the calorie count with all slow carbs. It
    would smell nasty.

The difference with humans is we can't conduct life-span
studies. We live too long and once it was learned that
some combination kills young (say the USDA food pyramid)
that group would have to be pulled out of the study. The
end result would be the discovery of some averaged
not-bad rather than some really good but obscure peak.

I think the source of the problem is what the curiculum
    has become.

Wrong. The problem is that a higher percentage of students are being taught
courses that in the past were for honors students only, and most of these
students are not prepared or willing to do what it takes to be successful.
For example, back in the 70's algebra and above was not required for all
students at most schools, and also a much higher percentage of students
dropped out of school altogether. These days the curriculum (this is the
correct spelling, btw) is watered down so that the students can meet their
parents expectations. What is passed off as Algebra II now would have
barely been adequate for Basic Algebra way back when. On the other hand, the
AP and Pre-AP curriculum is as challenging or even more challenging than
ever. Now there is a push to enroll more students into these classes, so
we'll see if that brings down the whole system. In any case, the problem is
not the curriculum. The problem is that each successive set of politicians
tries to outdo those before them by baffling the taxpayers with some
[censored] which breaks down to the notion that everyones kids should be able
to get an A+ in every advanced class available. Without working too hard at
it. When the students are not successful at learning the advanced material,
then it's always either the teacher's fault, or the fault of the curriculum
(which is a word that many people cannot even spell correctly).

Teaching is not notorious for high pay which is why there are so few
good ones. I'd love to teach Junior High.

For a BS, the starting pay sux.

    Hi Om🙂

Well, 1400 is not that bad. My husband without overtime, brings home less
than that(not much less, but less), we have quite a bit going out in 401K
and medical, though. He is considered to make decent money( we are in
Washington state). Our mort is high, and we have other bills. We still pay
our student loans🙂 I just don't know how someone can have student loans and
not be able to pay them back---esp till it gets to the point of garnishment.
My husband gets yearly bonuses and that does help, but still.

I do agree that BS starting pay sucks. I am a year from my nursing degree(
previously in dental), and the pay difference from an associates in nursing
to a BS, is only a dollar. Ridiculous.

Teachers, IMO, are not paid nearly enough. I used to be a teachers Aid
before my x-ray certification, and I was disgusted with how kids talk/treat
teachers. There was one middle school where I left. I called the school
district up immediately and told them why. I also made it quite clear that I
would not be willing to work in *any* middlel school again. LOL. I liked
High School kids much more. Kindergarden was the best overall--not yet
sarcastic and a dirty look got their attention🙂 My cousin is a 4th grade
teacher and since her husband also works, she doesn't mind the low pay. She
    loves her job.

What part of the medical field are you in, Om? I apologize in advance if you
    have already discussed it.

  20. Wow. That is hard. Is there anyway you can work a diff shift than him to
help out? You don't want bad credit or garnishment.

yup it would.. we need to get taxes fixed we have too much taken out
    and
stop with the 401k and also convince the student loan people we are too
    poor
    to have his wages garnished.
