scooters are good for balance and learning to steer by leaning too. Bit of variety as well.

I didn't ride a bike until I was about 10, up until then it was just scooters and billy carts. Just got on and rode it. The only problem I had was avoiding being seen by mum who'd given me strict instructions not to ride it.

Hmm, the couple of times I've climbed DB I only had a 21 as the biggest gear & agree that its bloody hard work. Didn't get under an hour though 🙁

I look forward to trying it with a bigger gear sometime.

the whole day was just really humbling actually. i knew the 21 had the potential to really hurt me as ive never climbed any hill over oh say 3km before. im still very new (and stupid). i made it to the first picnic stop flying - in and out of the saddle a lot and on pace with jono (probably about 1min down so not really on pace but ballpark)..this is about at 7km mark.

by the time i made it to the last big picnic spot i was starting to seriously hurt - i had been mashing for too long and forced to stand and deliver way too often that my lower back was hurting....between there and the 3km to the submit i totally lost the plot (and all the time) i was in a real world of pain like i hadnt really experienced before.

ive actually never honestly felt more lonely in my entire life than right then. i had no one and no one gave a [censored]. there was no get out of jail free card either like other sports ive tried - just me, DB, 21 tooth sprok and pain everywhere.

i remember saying to myself in my mind - "you are a real [censored] mate, you have no idea what it takes to do this sport or be good at it, you have no skills, you are overweight and you totally deserve to be where you are right now."

im really glad i did it though cos it totally made me realise that im nothing in cycling. absolutely nothing. i rested at the top and left really depressed but then the decent was the best fun ive had in a long time and by the time i hit the bottom and back into warburton my depression had lifted and some of the pain edged its way to the back of my mind as thoughts of doing it all again next weekend surfaced 🙂

I trash picked a bike, resprayed it and took the crappy cranks off it. It has a hand brake she can start to use and I can add cranks later.

Also got a bike off ebay for $1 that has the pedals and training wheels on it, she can get used to the pedalling action on that one with the hope that she'll get the balancing skills off the other one.

I picked up a little 12" bike at the op shop for $20 in mint condition that didn't have training wheels & was thinking of doing the pedals & chain off option for a start instead of getting training wheels for it.

My daughter already has pedalling nailed - she flys around on her trike on the flat: not to keen on the hills though.

She learnt how to pedal her trike pretty quickly cos my wife used rubber bands to strap her feet to the pedals!!
Nothing like being strapped to a fixed wheel to teach smooth pedal action 😄

    DB 21

have you got a 39 or 42 chainring? I did the Ferntree Gully side of the Tourist Rd last summer on 42/21, and it was no fun 🙂

Don't get disheartened when you cop a hiding on the bike. Easier said than done but it happens to everyone. Even Eddy Merckx and your favourite Lance Armstrong copped [censored] kickings and had bad days. Climbing is overrated anyway😉

  9. ok, I can't hold back any more!! Did yooz guys see that "saddle bag" thread on Bike Forums? And I hope no-one here uses one!! :p

Saddle bags!! For farks sake!! How [censored] does a bike have to be for it to needs 2kg of tools to be carried on it?!!

    get [censored]!!!!!!!!!!

  11. I used to know a girl who was known as 'saddlebags'.:p

Some of those seppos can't roll out the front door without taking half the friggin house with them. Spare tube, a basic multi tool (or a couple of allen keys), tyre levers and mobile phone and thats about it for me. Bit of food maybe if I'm out longer than three hours.

    LOL. I did it on 42x19 when I was a junior. :p

It was too hard for the first 3km (to that servo); I should've had a 23, or at least a 39/21. I don't think I've ever cracked 20kph for that first 3km.:p I don't even wanna say my speed for that first bit

yeah, the main point of a cycling top is the huge pockets, which can be easily accessed while riding. If I didn't have stuff in my pockets I could ride in a singlet:p

Was that the seat bag poll, or is there another thread I've missed.

Another nominee for pointless thread of the year is the "how to wash your jersey" thread which was running a few days back.

BTW, I shall have to confess to having a seat bag - my spare tube, puncture repair kit, Leatherman and snacks go in it. Mobile phone is useless out here (no reception) so no point carrying one of those. I usually wear t-shirts out riding so no pockets to stuff things into. What's wrong with a seat bag anyway?

:o I got a seat bag, my pump, tubes, patches live in there...
I hate loads of stuff in my pockets..or at least more than my mobile and some grub....

Jock, the fact you didnt ride a bike until you were 10 explains a lot! LOL!!!
Climbo, did you pick up the new bike? pics man, we need pics!

  20. I'm not anti saddle bag, but this is just wrong
