I look forward to trying it with a bigger gear sometime.
the whole day was just really humbling actually. i knew the 21 had the potential to really hurt me as ive never climbed any hill over oh say 3km before. im still very new (and stupid). i made it to the first picnic stop flying - in and out of the saddle a lot and on pace with jono (probably about 1min down so not really on pace but ballpark)..this is about at 7km mark.
by the time i made it to the last big picnic spot i was starting to seriously hurt - i had been mashing for too long and forced to stand and deliver way too often that my lower back was hurting....between there and the 3km to the submit i totally lost the plot (and all the time) i was in a real world of pain like i hadnt really experienced before.
ive actually never honestly felt more lonely in my entire life than right then. i had no one and no one gave a [censored]. there was no get out of jail free card either like other sports ive tried - just me, DB, 21 tooth sprok and pain everywhere.
i remember saying to myself in my mind - "you are a real [censored] mate, you have no idea what it takes to do this sport or be good at it, you have no skills, you are overweight and you totally deserve to be where you are right now."
im really glad i did it though cos it totally made me realise that im nothing in cycling. absolutely nothing. i rested at the top and left really depressed but then the decent was the best fun ive had in a long time and by the time i hit the bottom and back into warburton my depression had lifted and some of the pain edged its way to the back of my mind as thoughts of doing it all again next weekend surfaced 🙂
