Once there were more than 100 different ferries in Zeeland and it's Scheldt estuarium. For the locals the ferry service was often the only link from their own island to the rest of the world. Most of the ferry services have now gone. They are redundant thanks to the collection of dams, bridges and tunnels that connect the islands. Yet there are about 15 ferries still operating, especially for cyclists and pedestrians.
If you're trying to connect the Netherlands with Belgium and you want to stay close to the North Sea, the main ferry solution is Breskens-Vlissingen, available all year. All other services are mostly limited to summertime and do not run all day. But they present a nice way of cycling, and having a rest in the meanwhile on a ferry service.
Rondje met een Pontje presents the 15 ferry services. At the right you can click through to discover the exact info and time tables. Also check this page where the information is presented in a different way : Rondje met een Pontje

There are more ways for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the river. Between Terneuzen and Ellewoutsdijk is the 'Westerscheldetunnel'. It's only for motorized vehicles but cyclists may make use of a bus, run by Connexxion, reservations 1 hour in advance at +31 113 23 33 33.

A second way is the tunnel for pedestrians and cyclists in the city of Antwerpen (Belgium).

Schelde = Scheldt = Escaut
Westerschelde = Western Scheldt
Oosterschelde = Eastern Scheldt
