Thou shalt always use the latest list to update as well - by using an old one you've wiped out more recent updates....
Yeah....I added mine the other day since you moved up a few notches I didn't want Fergie sitting down at the bottom of the list. :D

Yeah - and I know he knows :p

0.95 is often used however it can range from 0.92 - 0.98.

A few thoughts:

i. Not everyone has same ratio of 20-min to 60-min power. Overall fitness as well as one's anaerobic work capacity can influence the ratio not to mention the test protocol (i.e. what you did before the 20-min test).

ii. This ratio can vary up/down for an individual through training.

iii. It's usually a good idea to have a 2nd check point for FTP.

e.g. if you did a full blown effort of ~ 5-min and used that along with your 20-min result in the Critical Power model, that might help you nail it down a little tighter.

Here are my thoughts on methods used to assess FTP:
http://alex-cycle.blogspot.com/2008/05/seven-deadly-sins.html
i. I have no fitness. :D Anaerobic work right now is not an option. My brain remembers from a little over a decade ago what it was like to be able to recover quickly from anaerobic efforts, my heart, lungs and legs just laugh and seize up when I try... and wished that I'd never raced before. As for "what I do before the test" - the answer now is a bit of a warm up. You try doing this on PowerCranks when your hip flexors are back to square one and my hamstrings have all but forgotten how to ride. :p My poor quads... That said, that initial test was done with the cranks in fixed mode. In due time I'll probably run test in both fixed and PC mode to see what, if any, the difference is...

iii. Thanks for that info. I'll take a read of the link later today.

Shouldn't Feltrider be one notch higher on the list?

I would say OVERLY modest. His blog shows a 194 W NP for a 2 hr12 min ride.:)
Nicely done.

Nice back wheel too.

Maybe a cattleprod saddle could tempt him to push a bit harder on the pedals for 20 minutes. :p With 194 watts NP for that long I'm sure there's a fair amount of of watts left in the hidden stash of power just waiting to be unleashed.

Maybe something is not calibrated right :)

Swampy, I have been reading your posts about leg splitting training and admiring those thoughts in the way I used to admire the writings of Tyson. Mainly because I completely comprehend the pain these days as I begin my journey training with the use of a power meter.

I now respect all of the guys that are and have been training in the L4 zone since I can relate to the discomfort, but it is sure sweet once I get the bike off the trainer and get out on the road. Love It!!!

Now looking ahead to "2009 FTP" :)

Yeah Felt, you should be able to hit something near the mid 200s (at least 240?) with that kind of ride. You might have some of that initial/indoor outdoor inconsistencies that all of us have. Good luck. If you follow Tyson's path, you will be hitting 400 in a relatively short time.

Now I am concerned that something with my PT is messed up because I have tried to ride with guys that claim to have an FT of 250 and I can't hang with them very long (30+/- miles and then I fall off on flat to rolling terrain).

Sorry this seems to be a distraction to the thread's intention.

30 miles is long enough... Where do they get their FT of 250 from, a powermeter or a guestimate?

If you'd zero'd your powertap at somepoint close to doing that two hour ride you can be pretty confident that your numbers are good and you'd have a FTP a fair bit higher than what you posted.

Then again, the numbers are only a reference from which you can work from.

I wouldnt think too much about a sweaty, balding, fat guy suffering on a half built up 13 year old steel bike suffering miserably in a garage in the middle of nowheresville, California. LOL But you could always chuckle at the fact that I'm running 10speed gearing in the rear with old school 105 downtube gear levers in friction mode. Trying to change gears whilst becoming a picture of uncoordination midway through the last 3x20 minute effort on the Powercranks is almost Monty Pythonesque. I have a can of Spam somewhere and I could quite easily double as Mr Creosote (both physically and functionaly *barf*)... all I'd need is a dead parrot and a couple of old gossiping ladies. :D

Two of them are Powertap users for a couple of years.
Maybe it is low because I did my test on the KK trainer.

Don't let that keep you from getting a more accurate FTP value. There could be many different reasons why you can't always keep up with those guys. If you're not up to 1 hr indoor FTP test, do some tests like 5, 12, 20 minutes and use the Monod spreadsheet to get a fairly accurate estimate.

I'm going to get in on this, mainly to remind myself how much form I've lost since the summer - was 345W...72kg...4.8W/kg, then started working in London. Back in Wales in January and hopefully heading up towards the top of the chart.

wow, to Monod, using 5, 7 and 20 minute test, I would have an FTP of 240 W.. since my 20' test was 249 W, it seems to me a rather optimistic spreadsheet. Am I wrong? :)

I think there is some consesus it showing a bit optimistic value in 60 min. Instead the critical power would be more realistic. At least for me personnally it looks to be very close to what I "think" as my FTP.

Bugger me, have some work to do. 20kg overweight. But funny thing is on track was rolling some ex World Champs and attacking a guy who become World Champ a month later??? Have 2 powertaps so both can't be reading low? Height? 1.735m so perhaps if I achieve my goal to get to 70kg things will improve.
