Garmin Edge 305 GPS: Is it worth the investment?

well, not very often, but I have been out on roads that I wasn't that familiar with and then needed to reroute because of incliment weather (thunder and lightening). On one ride, a bunch of people thought they'd missed a turn somewhere (new route) and because of the mapping feature I was able to determine that we were about a quarter mile shy of the intersection. It can happen on paved forest service roads where the intersections are not well marked. I've also been rerouted because of construction.

Ideally I'd like to have both. They each serve functions that the other doesn't. If you want to be able to see the streets and the route, then the mapping software is ideal. If you don't care about that and don't care about the navigation feature (features that can be used in the car and backpacking as well) then go for the Edge, or as someone pointed out, the forerunner. all great units. Of course, the most important thing is to get out and ride. :)
