Looking for Used Frameset in Boston

I recently moved to the Boston area from Minneapolis and I could use
some advice on buying a frameset for my fiancee.
I'd like to set her up with a good quality, older steel frame,
something from the 80's or later, probably 531 or Columbus SL.
Something that is good, but not faddish.
Unfortunately, I haven't had any luck looking in the Globe or at any
of the Belmont-area bike shops that I've been to. I did the same sort
of thing for myself a year ago in
Minneapolis and had good luck at a community bike shop that sold used
bikes and at an auction of impounded bikes run by the police
department. Are there any similar places (or other good venues to
search) in the Boston area? Do the Boston-area PDs hold bike
auctions?

Thanks,
John

Try Paramount Bicycle Repair in Somerville, MA 617-666-6072

They might be able to put you on the right track.

Perhaps try out Bikes not Bombs (http://www.bikesnotbombs.org) in
Jamaica Plain, it's a community-oriented bike refurb-resale-repair
type place...I think there might be something similar in Cambridge, by
Porter Square?

And yes craigslist is very good too, though people often ask rather
inflated prices for their bikes.

Hmm...the "new" incarnation of "The Bicycle Exchange" is on Mass Ave
near Porter Sq. 617-864-1300 (AFAICT, this is not connected in any way
with the original, gone-but-not-forgotten Bicycle Exchange in Harvard
Sq.)

There's also "Cambridge Bicycle", formerly known as "The Bicycle
Workshop" on Mass Ave between Central Sq and MIT. 617-876-6555

Thanks for the advice. I'll check the places out.

Thanks for the offer on the Torelli, but it's a little out of my price
range for a frame.

Isn't Sheldon from Boston, or nearby. Harris Cyclery is where he
works. Also, since god invented ebay, a lot of people stopped
advertising in the classifieds. There are regularly frames for less
than $300 with sl, slx, 531, ishiwata, tange 1, etc on ebay. I fact,
you can probably find a complete japanese bike with a 600 group for
less than $300. Japanese seamless db tubing is just as good, as
italian, and japanese bikes from the 80s had better finishes and were
cheaper.

If you want a modern frame, you can buy a brand new aluminum frame for
about $100 or ebay.
