I purchased this bike as a bare frameset from a former member of the
Montgomery-Subaru team circa 1996 or so. Lance Armstrong had turned
pro for Montgomery-Subaru circa 1992 and they ordered several of these
low-profile bikes. I still have a promotional poster from the team
that shows one of these bikes in the foreground and the team lineup
with Armstrong in the background. At the time the bikes were painted
white with bright orange trim on the forks.
I have never ridden this bike. I purchased it when I was contemplating
my 18th "come back" (or something to that effect) and never felt that I
was fit enough to do it justice. Now that I am hitting the half
century mark I must reluctantly concede that I will most likely never
again ride as quickly as I did when I was 19 unless it's on a
motorcycle. My loss is your gain, so to speak.
It was repainted by CycleArt, who I understand painted the original US
built Masis. I asked for the same orange color that was being used on
Gran Criteriums and the decals that were applied were Gran Criterium
"flags of many nations" decals that had the Gran Criterium logo snipped
out of them.
According to lore (I read it on eBay once so it must be true!) there
were ten of the Record time trial bikes built; two in Italy and the
rest in the USA. This bike has "001" and M5800" stamped on the bottom
bracket shell. There is also the "M" cutout in the bottom bracket
shell. The bike measures 23.5" from the middle of the bottom bracket
to the top of the seat tube so that matches the M5800 designation.
The parts are basically what I had laying around when the bike was
assembled 10 years ago. Some good, some not so fancy.
The rear wheel is a standard-sized wheel. There is an 8 speed 12-19
freewheel and an Ambrosio Durex rim. Cannot tell what the tire is but
it's most likely some sort of Panaracer time trial tire. The hub is a
Campagnolo Record.
The front wheel is a 26" Ambrosio Durex Aero rim with radial spokes, a
Panaracer tire, and some sort of Campy hub that doesn't look like a
Record but still looks pretty good.
Cranks are 175mm Campagnolo Nuevo Record. Chainrings are 52x42 and
some sort of black non-Campy ring. The pedals are either Campy Record
or Super Record with titanium axles (I had a set of titanium pedals and
they are either on this bike or another bike - someone will hit the
jackpot but frankly I'm not going to take them off the bikes to figure
out which bike has which pedals
Brakes are Campy Record with Modolo levers. I notice that the hoods on
the levers are dried out and aged a bit so be aware of that.
The water bottle is a Shimano AX. There is one Shimano AX lever; the
front derailleur does NOT have a lever since it would have been used
mostly to guide the chain. Sorry, but I don't know offhand where the
other lever is at.
Derailleurs are Campagnolo.
As you can tell the pads were never even placed on the aero bars and
the Cinelli tape shows no signs of ever being used.
I am not sure what tubing was used in building the bike; as we all know
the lore is that Masi liked to mix Reynolds and Columbus tubes. It
does seem to be a surprisingly stout frame, however, and when it was
repainted it was aligned and pronounced in good shape.
I am estimating the shipping cost at $100 to pack and ship in the
continental USA. I will have a local bicycle shop do the packing. If
the bill is less than that the balance will be returned to the
purchaser.
The frame is pristine and in as nice of a condition as any brand new
frame that I have ever seen at a bicycle shop. However, no warranties
meant or implied, your mileage may vary, etc., etc. This is, after
all, a used team bicycle, even if it is an extremely exotic bicycle
with a VERY interesting pedigree.

The following is a deconstruction of the ******** above to present the
likely facts which the seller has a long-standing, years-long in fact,
history of avoiding in everything he posts or presents about himself
online. When offline, or in his loser so-called real life, he is a
known plagiarist, liar, sweetheart scammer, ambulance chaser, and has
committed various forms of abuse, mostly against older to elderly
females during his attempts at stealing from them all he could.
Avoid this known scammer and miscreant at all costs. Previous
unsuspecting victims of his paid dearly in both financial and emotional
setbacks due to the scumbag.
1) "contemplating my 18th "come back" (or something to that effect)"
a person has to accomplish something before they can have a "comeback";
this lying sack of **** has never accomplished anything in his life;
that's why he squandered money his pappy gave him for at least one of
his various failed ventures, he plagiarizes people who assumed he was
their friend; and is currently selling this because his mammy hasn't
yet died which he has been fervently anticipating in hope of receiving
more financial life support for his loser lifestyle
2) Now that I am hitting the half century mark
"another outright lie; he's already past that milestone"
3) "My loss is your gain, so to speak"
the thief undoubtedly stole this or at least a number of components for
it in the manner that he sweetheart scams elderly women to further
support his loser lifestyle; he sweetheart scammed someone out of
$30,000 three years ago and has lied about its intended purpose and
other details concerning it
4) "who I understand"
either they did, or they didn't; if the putz doesn't know the facts,
his description has no validity
5) "decals that had the Gran Criterium logo snipped out of them."
then they are butchered decals that mean absolutely nothing and
probably detract from whatever intrinsic or historic value they may
have had; they are merely decoration meant to obfuscate the truth
that this particular frame could be just about anything
6) "According to lore (I read it on eBay once so it must be true!)"
that is the level of 'expertise' this pinhead attempts to pass off as
authoritative fact; the reality is, he doesn't know and is merely
promoting a scam
7) "so that matches the M5800 designation"
why would someone state details in that manner? to further pass off a
scam, is about the only reason; either it is an M5800, or it isn't
8) "The parts are basically what I had laying around when the bike was
assembled 10 years ago. Some good, some not so fancy."
so, what is being peddled here is a cobbled together pile of parts with
no authentic provenance
9) "Cannot tell what the tire is but it's most likely some sort of"
further proof that the known thief and plagiarist has no idea what he
is selling; it also imparts the fact that the lying sack of ****
couldn't have made the aforementioned "comeback" because he never
accomplished anything noteworthy to start with; what kind of honest
depiction is, "but it's most likely some sort of"???????
10) "and some sort of Campy hub that doesn't look like a Record but
still looks pretty good"
who really owns/owned this bike? sure doesn't sound like the person
currently selling it knows anything about it or has the knowledge and
capability to properly ascertain which specific components are utilized
on this alleged "Lance Armstrong/Montgomery-Subaru" historical unit;
remembers the "The parts are basically what I had laying around"
comment? why doesn't he know what components they are or, disassemble
the components to determine what the part ase if he's such an
authority? seems like more evidence of his attempting to run one scam
or another
11) "and some sort of black non-Campy ring."
how many vagaries can he get away with while attempting to pass off
this questionable bike as being a noteworthy piece?
12) "The pedals are either"; "I had a set of titanium pedals and they
are either on this bike or another bike"
meaning they could be anything, and, more evidence of this bike being
nothing but a frame with cobbled together parts that have no relevance
to the "Lance Armstrong/Montgomery-Subaru" units he is trying to make
it out to be
13) "so be aware of that"
through my years of dealing with this inept scammer and malicious
internet TROLL, he has never failed to grossly misrepresent anything
associated with himself; consider the five words quoted immediately
above as your main focus when considering everything having to do with
this liar and thief
14) "the front derailleur does NOT have a lever since it would have
been used mostly to guide the chain. Sorry, but I don't know offhand
where the other lever is at."
huh???? there's a derailleur on the bike but it wouldn't be used for
any reason but to guide the chain, but, there was a lever to operate
the derailleur and he doesn't have it????? why would a bike have the
added weight of an unused derailleur and lever assembly affixed to it
when saving weight is a critical design element?
15) "I am not sure what tubing was used", and, "as we all know the
lore"
sounds like more typical obfuscation regarding this questionable
ratbike
16) "It does seem to be a surprisingly stout frame, however"
sure, but do you want to take the word of some dolt who knows nothing
about the complete bike or various critical components on it except
what he can visually see?
17) "when it was repainted it was aligned and pronounced in good
shape."
exactly why was this repainted and precisely who "pronounced it in good
shape"? the clueless dolt passing this off as something it is not? was
there a critical need to have it aligned or, if it were truly aligned,
was it done by competent and knowledgeable technicians?
18) "I am estimating the shipping cost at $100 to pack and ship in the
continental USA.
gee, the continental US is quite large; it just might cost a bit more
to ship from Jacksonville, Florida to somewhere in Oregon than it would
to somewhere in Georgia
19) "I will have a local bicycle shop do the packing"
with no mention of how much they may charge, and no assurance of how
good of a job they may do, and the possibility that both the shop and
the seller may disagree who is at fault if damage or loss occurs during
shipping, it seems like a recipe for disaster, the previously mentioned
warning of, "so be aware of that", seems in order here
20) "If the bill is less than that the balance will be returned to the
purchaser."
sure it will; all the buyer has to do is pay up front and then expect a
known sweetheart scammer, plagiarist, and malicious internet TROLL who
uses 50+ aliases to harass dozens of people return any shipping fees
not required
BWAhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
21) "The frame is pristine and in as nice of a condition as any brand
new frame that I have ever seen at a bicycle shop"
but... it's been repainted for an unspecified reason and it has
allegedly been aligned for an unspecified reason and by unspecified
individuals; I'm sure this frame looks just as nice as any Schwinn,
Huffy, or other common bike found in some nondescript "bicycle shop"
22) "However, no warranties meant or implied, your mileage may vary,
etc., etc."
I guess after all that pedigree ******** was stated the seller had to
include a different version of his, "so be aware of that", disclaimer
23) "This is, after all, a used team bicycle"
with how much abuse and subsequent repairs, 'bondo', incorrect paint
and incorrect decals or other cover-ups applied to it?
24) "even if it is an extremely exotic bicycle with a VERY interesting
pedigree"
claimed by a seller known to ********, lie, and utilize 50+ aliases
while harassing dozens of netizens in every discussion forum he has
soiled by his presence; there is no mention of certification or proof
of provenance regarding this cobbled together ratbike being anything
more than what the seller wishes to pass it off as, not what it truly
may be, which, considering the sales pitch, is very, very questionable
at best; at worst, well, that's for the buyer to find out...
"so be aware of that"
BWAhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BWAhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BWAhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
