sprockets have moved towards outside of wheel leaving one of the
sprockets in a place on hub where there is nothing on hub for it to
grip. at first i thought the sprocket was stripped but if i push all
the sprockets back into position it is put back in a place on hub where
it has something to grip. help!

Your lockring is unscrewing.

See http://sheldonbrown.com/k7.html#remove for a picture of
approximately what should be there, and how to tighten it back up.

Sounds like the Cassette Lockring is losse or missing.
Take a look at Park Tool Repair section:
http://www.parktool.com/repair_help/FAQcogs.shtml

I took it to bike shop and had it repaired for 26 canadian dollars. He
immediately said it was the bearing. I don't think it is a cassette
type. I kept the old part and compared to new part and the spacers
between sprockets are the same except that they are wider on new part .

it seems the spacers shrunk because there is enough room to add another
spacer on faulty hub. i guess the spacers are called bearings. at
least i know why the bike was on sale now.
