Is this really such an issue for the handful of races we do that aren't club/all-in/whatever races?
I gather you're talking about the Tour of Bright, and the chat on Cycling Tips.
You might remember that I had a whinge when the masters age was dropped to 30, coz I wrongly assumed that the pelobunches at Sandown would get fully-massive, vre.
That obviously didn't happen, for some reason.
I've got a theory that many decent 30-to-35-year-old riders don't race masters regularly because their mates give them grief for not winning all the time.
Like:
Friend of masters rider: "so, Mr 32-yr-old Gun Rider, you race masters, right?
Gun 32-year-old: "yeah, sometimes."
Friend: "You must win all the time, right?"
Gun 32-yr-old: "well, no, not really, but I get some results"
Friend: "I don't get it. Why don't you win every week? Aren't most of those guys old, like, 35, or well over?"
Gun 32-yr-old: "Yeah, probably. I'm not really sure."
Friend: "I still don't get it. You regularly get results at Glenvale, or at least top-tens, and you're always in the breaks, coz you're a really strong rider, so why don't you smash the old guys?"
Gun 32-yr-old: "Well, it's not that simple. It's harder than you think. There are some good riders there."
Friend: "But they're so old. I still don't get why you don't win every week."
Gun 32-yr-old: "well, I dunno what else I can tell ya."
So, Mr 32-year-old stops racing masters. Ha.
