You're absolutely correct. In League it's a total farce. The ump might as well just tell twelve blokes to give each other a hug and then give the ball to the scrumhalf or no.8 to run around them with it.
Even in Real Rugby it doesn't seem as genuine as it used to be.

Must say Karmeliet Tripel and bbq'd marinated octopus go together quite nicely.
The Festival of Steve has been an absolute ripper.
Shame Webber couldn't get up.

Both GFs were pretty much fizzers. Thankfully I was blessed with pleasant scrumlike distractions (but without the other eleven blokes) with gfs to complement them both. 😉 I still managed a happy sportfilled weekend intertwined with all the revelry. F1 was great. Not so sure about Bettini's win. Cricket with a cricket ball at Rushcutter's Bay park with no pads or gloves was great fun despite some unwilling, alright then, cranky pedestrian bystanders/accidental fielders; a drunken ride to Clovelly and back for tennis which I somehow still managed to win; a trip to the pub which devolved into amusing dinkie laps for drunken chikas and sadly (for me at least) a broken computer mount. Missed my 6.30 ride to Narrabeen and back on Sunday morning but I shan't complain.

The world road championship was the best world title race I have seen for a number of years (even though Cadel rode like a blockhead). Bettini stuck it right up 'em. Don't miss the highlights on the SBS.

Took my new cross check for a hoon up the pine forest fire tracks today. Good fun. 🙂 I even surprised myself getting my fat [censored] up a really steep rutted track on the 36x25.

I actually didn't mind the AFL grand final, given it was Geelong's first win in a million years, and we haven't had a big blow-out for a long while.

Theres some ins and outs though. Out with the midget stem and in with a 120mm. Out with the weird Salsa bars and in with some Cinelli top 64's or 3ttt Merckx bars. Out with the seat and ugly seatpost, in with an old Suntour superbe post and Rolls saddle I had lying around (though a few have mysteriously disappeared of late - did the postman arrive Gus?) 🙂 . I have some STI's lying around but I think I'll give the handlebar control a go first.

Out with the dork disk and I have some semi-slick 32c road tyres ready.

New SPDs to come next week, racks and panniers too.

I love my Bar-ends, and they're not even indexed. What panniers are you getting? I've been looking for something decent for ages, but at the moment, my disposal store canvas bags are just as good as any i've seen (for the price)
I dunno about the saddles mate, i've been out of Sydney since Friday morning (and i missed a very important B'day party because of it) with the Mrs. Even so, the mail service at my work is so pathetic that they'll probably only arrive there when i get there tomorrow.

Expat has made it clear on a number of occasions that he'd like us all back but I think the consensus has been that we prefer the relative freedom of this forum (in terms of lack of censorship) plus it's run by an Aussie.

Seems a few people follow our little rambling thread, we've even scored a mention here

The bike shop reckons a Topeak rack. They had the same brand panniers, which looked ok to me. Plenty of storage pockets, though I think they were only water repellant, not water proof.

Topeak racks are excellent value for money - not too expensive, but more importantly, will take daily abuse if you dish it out (as I have for a while on mine now). Not in the same class as the old man mountain ones, but they're also a third of the price!

Pass on the Topeak panniers though - they don't look like they'd survive much other than gentle commuting. Topeak rack top bags are okay, though.

For panniers, I'd go for Deuter ones. They look to be the best value of the better brands. Haven't tried them, so can only go on reputation.

The Axiom Cartier panniers aren't too bad either. They also seem to be pretty waterproof. Might be worth looking at.

I'm not criticising his ability, he was one of the best on the day and he can really hurt himself and suffer like a dog. What annoys me is that he wastes far too much energy by not riding right up on the wheels and reacting immediately when moves go. In a Tour mountain stage, yeah, you can't go into the red too much and need to ride tempo, but in a one day race you have to react. On at least several occassion Evans didn't react quickly to the attack and had to chase down a 40-50m gap.

When he attacks he doesn't make the attack count. Little digs to test the opposition out are a total waste of time. Then he telegraphs his attacks. You can tell he's going to jump about 5 seconds before he does it. The attack at 1km to go was hilarious. He should have gone when he first thought about it (you'll see it in the highlights). Instead the other four knew it was coming. He gets criticised for being a follower, but he's not especially cunning IMO. And that constant waving his elbow around to get blokes to roll through pisses me off no end! :p

It's bloody frustrating to watch. Evans is a seasoned professional and this is fundamental stuff. When I was a kid it was drummed into me by old sneaky trackies and ex-euro-dog pros to 'put the gap in when you attack and make it count', 'Hold the farkin wheel' and 'react with the move' .

Plus Bettini is a shifty dirtbag. Too smart for them blokes in any case. He stitched up his teammate Pozzato by making the race, then he stitched up the blokes in the break. Legend.
