The dole situation ended pretty early but I think it was only late into my 4 year stint that housing was finished too. Actually, I recall at the time I had this real craze on tropical fish and had several fresh water and marine tanks in my flat. So, I took a job in a night-club to supplement my income.
But what I'm trying to get across to you is the fact student debt simply wasn't an issue. It was the Labour Party that screwed up free education and the reasons are simple.
Basically you can't maintain a high standard of living in an over-populated country and the U.K. is plain and simply over-populated, due to Labour policy that immigration should be without fixed limit.
There is no real comparison between huge countries like the U.S., Australia and a small island. Under Labour high immigration (triggered by greed and a desire to opt out of minimum wage legislation through sweat shop production) has sent the population heading towards 70 million in a country far far smaller than Spain, yet with a considerably higher population. This is why pensions, welfare, educational and living standards are lower over here than you would find in, say, Spain or France. This is also why pollution and over-crowded roads are so evident.
The thing is, New Labour has brainwashed the population into believing they represent some kind of socialist ideal and when they introduce right-wing policies, it's considered O.K. But can you imagine how the reaction would have been if the Tories had:
(1) Drawn up a constitutional reform making it a criminal offence to criticize religion in the name of secular ideals.
(2) Lied over the reasons for going to war and insulted the French over their opposition to it.
(3) Scrapped state educational funding.
(4) Created a cheap labour sub-economy by exploiting migrants.
(5) Threatened to split the families of asylum seekers and take their kids into care.
(6) Threatening to withdraw social security from handicapped people whom they label as scroungers.

Hmm, were you studying in Scotland ? The Dole thing was definitely verboten in England by '91.

The fact is Fred will side with anybody basically on the basis of personal prejudice as opposed to direct analysis. He's insulted others on this forum, not just me as it happens and I'm sure I could dig up a few juicy quotations. I even heard some folks wanted him banned from the forum (by his own admission some months back) so he can't be quite so popular as he makes out.

Actually I don't mind Carrera much. I misjudged him badly when I first tripped over his posts. I still think he's horribly deluded about the true nature of the Conservative party, but he has contributed some fair points and he takes a battering with more dignity than I do.

Fair play to the lad, but I'm not gonna start going easy on his politics !

There is some hope for Carrera. OTOH Flappy should be volunteering his thick skull as a test subject for the RNEP.
