OK, I'm in serious need of cholesteral reduction. My last holdout is
my beloved butter (still gonna use real butter on my grilled wild
Sockeye salmon tonight!! 🙂. I gotta find one of those healthy
    no-cholesterol, no-trans-fat, sodium-free, non-hydrogenated,
    free-range, dairy-free, non-genetically engineered, frontal
    lobotomized, save-the-children-oceans-air, pro-choice, butter
substitutes that will extend my life until my SS runs out and I can be
a healthy drooling idiot sleeping under a bridge. Preferably, it
should actaully taste in the same galaxy as butter and not be a
semi-pourable liquid at below freezing temperatures. Any
    recommendations?

Start reading the labels of the whipped margarines. I use Parkay.
    0 cholesteral, 0 transfat. 7g fat (1.5g saturated fat)

we do butter-parmesan-cayenne here, usually. but I'm thinking
that sweet kettle corn could be nice the next night we're up
    watching a movie.

A couple of qualifiers here: 1) It's been so long since I've had
"real" kettle corn that I might be easily impressed by a kettle
corn "wannabe", and B) I really do prefer bulk popcorn made in my
microwave popper bowl (yep, I'll use Parm too, as a treat), but...

Jolly Time makes a decent microwave lo cal/lo fat kettle corn, 225
cals for the whole bag, same as their ultra-low butter product.

I do not eat microwave popcorn. I have tried the ones made with
non-hydrogenated oils and natural flavors, and i still prefer to make it
in my cast iron dutch oven. It doesnt really take much more time or
effort, is much cheaper, wastes less packaging, and I can flavor it
    however I want.

Earth Balance is really really REALLY good. I get it at Trader Joes or a
chain we have called Fred Meyers. I bake with it and people say "how can
this be...you don't eat butter". I even make something gheeish out of it
by simmering some thin sliced of tofu in it until they are nice and
brown and impart a toasted flavour.
Keep in mind diet onlly goes so far in most people with lipid problems.
Activity and meds may be in your future, and those people who tell me
checkup after checkup...I'll get to that diet and join a gym....I tell
them to set a realistic date, and if they don't do it by then, have a
chat with themselves and possibly admit they may be facing meds.
    Best of luck.
PS: Earth Balance's crisco substitute without trans fats is superb for
pie crust. I did a side by side comparison and the crust was definitely
    better.

Exercise or Lipitor. Eat the butter. Most of the substitutes are as bad
and many are worse, not to mention the fact that they are so tastey too.
Life has too many side effects.

Statistics: 50% of heart attacks occur in people without high cholesterol.
Hmm ... does this also mean that 50% of people who have had their
cholesterol lowered by statins still have heart attacks?
    Just pondering...

My friend that smokes 2 packs a day is worried about his cholestrol. Most
recommendations concerning health issues come from those PRACTICING
    physicians.

99% (there are crackpots in every field) of docs would NOT advise
putting cholesterol control in front of smoking cessation. If, however,
you have someone who refuses to stop, you don't just write them off.

I actually don't understand what your two sentences have to do with each
other, other than they both seem somewhat snide.

I use Smart Balance "butter" and their mayo, which by the way is very

Veganaise, in the refridgerated section of healthfood stores and fancier

Yeah, I saw it at TJ's the other day and liked what I saw, but figured
I'd hold off till I looked at the competition. Well, I saw it and am
not impressed. Your "really really REALLY good" testiment appears to

And I hope lots of people use it and the food industry gets a hint.
At stores around here the cashiers having cards you can jot down "please
give more non-trans fatty foods a try". List any brands you have to go
elsewhere to buy. Takes 15 seconds while they ring up.

If i had an air popper, i would use that. but i don't and need the
cabinet space for other things 🙂 you don't need much oil to pop plain
popcorn in anyhow, a few tablespoons per 12ish cups all-popped popcorn.

*I* do not prefer butter alternatives, but there are some decent ones on
    the market.

  14. Spectum also makes a spray olive oil that actually has a good flavor.
I use it with whole grain phyllo dough to wrap salmon sometimes. With
a berry sauce who needs the butter? Also try adding flax oil to
dressings. I have recently cut way back on my butter intake and miss
it less and less everyday. I have been even making scones with a non
hydrogenated palm shortening and apple/lemon juice combo. Quite tasty.

  15. Brummel and Brown (made with yogurt and no trans fats) is fairly good.

Still doesn't taste as good as real butter, but for a substitute, it's
    not bad.

You might re-read your own post, in which you stated in reply to a post by
Sarah Bennett who simply stated to use less butter (and I quote):

Start by cutting a stick into 1 Tbsp "pats". Every time you eat

It worked for me. In fact, a week ago I started cutting my Tbsp
portions in half. It's amazing how many things that used to need
a whole pat now STILL WORK with a half!

(PS: I use the spray/baking/"Pam" stuff on my popcorn, only to
help heep the garlic/onion powder mixture reasonably attached.)

That's right, you're the one who started the popcorn stuff, aren't you?
That's right, you brought up the PAM spray and seasoning popcorn in a butter

How much butter are you eating/using now? Reducing dietary cholesterol
is just one way to improving blood cholesterol levels, and if you
eliminate other sources of animal fats, a *little* butter probably
won't hurt a great deal. But save it for special -- don't go massaging
butter under the skin to roast a chicken! There are many sauces other
than butter ones for meat and veg.

There are many cholesterol-reducing medications now, and common or
garden weight loss usualy makes a difference, if appropriate.

I would not for "substitutes," but for recipes and methods that don't
require butter. Cook with oil. Skip the pancakes for breakfast. Does
your salmon really *require* butter? It's a fatty fish anyhow. Grill
with a spicy glaze or sear with a sesame seed 'crust'.
